Editorial Specialist

The Office of External Affairs encompasses three teams: 1) Communications and Marketing; 2) Development and Constituent Relations; and 3) Finance and Administration.

The award-winning Communications and Marketing team provides strategic communications, external and internal communications, and marketing services for the School across a variety of digital, print, and physical platforms. This includes brand and identity management, digital strategies and web services, editorial and content strategies, visual communications, media and public relations, social media, and integrated marketing campaigns.

We are seeking anEditorial Specialist who will support the Communications and Marketing team of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health by helping to coordinate, research, create, and distribute content across the School’s print and digital channels, including the School’s flagship, magazine, and Global Health NOW (GHN) websites; email newsletters; and social media and other distribution channels.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Editorial, this position is part of the larger Communications and Marketing team within the Office of External Affairs, which also includes strategy, design, web, and audience engagement teams. The editorial specialist will work cross-functionally across these teams.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with social and design teams to translate articles and other content created by the editorial team into engaging social-ready formats (including text, graphics, video, audiograms, etc.).
  • Contribute summaries and other content to School newsletters, including GHN and Expert Insights.
  • Track magazine reader engagement and conduct periodic reader surveys. Help to monitor and share magazine and GHN performance metrics.
  • Upload articles and images to GHN, magazine, and flagship websites; edit and update content as needed.
  • Produce daily GHN social media posts.
  • Scout for and add regular features to the daily GHN newsletter.
  • Manage GHN editorial email account, responding to questions and supporting subscriber engagement.
  • Across teams and platforms, proofread content in adherence to established editorial style, and provide fact-checking support as needed.
  • Assist with coordination and tracking of project-related contracts and payments.
  • Perform other tasks and support other major initiatives of the Communications and Marketing Team as needed.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or related field.
  • Two years’ experience in writing and communications digital publishing roles, either via internships or full-time work, and demonstrated reliability in a communications environment.
  • Proven ability to synthesize and simplify complex, scientific, or technical information.
  • Experience creating and adapting content for a variety of social media channels.
  • Demonstrated versatility in writing styles, including news stories and social media content.
  • Experience with digital publishing platforms and current social media channels, as well as image-editing software such as Photoshop.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of style and grammar rules.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of website and social media analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong interest and experience in writing and communications with a background in Health, Science, or Journalism.
  • Experience or interest in public health or higher education.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with demanding and/or shifting deadlines.
  • Positive work attitude and habits including strong interpersonal skills, reliability, flexibility, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and on a team.
  • Desire to grow and be challenged within a team.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
