The South Carolina Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) invites applications for faculty positions in Computer Science, with 10-month academic appointments, beginning Fall 2025. GSSM anticipates hiring multiple faculty members if qualified applicants are determined through the search process. Review of applications will begin immediately. 

GSSM is a public, tuition-free, STEM high school for students across the state of South Carolina. The school offers residential, virtual, and outreach programs to advance the state's most talented and motivated students by offering them a transformative STEM education.

Faculty hired in this position will teach in GSSM's Online Programs. These programs provide STEM-focused courses to highly motivated 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade students across the state of South Carolina. Classes are taught live via Zoom to students who are working from their home high schools. A public school teaching certificate is not required. 

Courses at GSSM are modeled after college-like schedules and teaching environments. Computer Science courses taught include AP Computer Science, Python for Scientists, Intro to Computer Networking, Game Design, Data Structures & Algorithms, and Cybersecurity Fundamentals. There could be the opportunity for faculty to develop new Computer Science courses. Instructors are expected to attend committee meetings, maintain regular office hours, and will have occasional evening/weekend commitments. Salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials, experience, and unique capabilities. 

The significant areas of responsibility for this position include:

  • Develop course content and methodology to demonstrate student achievement in the area of instruction. Develop a student evaluation system or course content and instructional methods.
  • Maintain appropriate class and/or lab and instruction schedules. Explore, develop, and, when appropriate, implement innovative methodology for successful instruction. Work with the Department Chair and/or the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/or VP for Academics in developing, setting, and sharing successful instructional methods.
  • Work with students in and out of the classroom and counsel students to increase understanding, comprehension, and effective demonstration of competency in the course(s). Set and maintain appropriate times for students to meet with the instructor to improve competency.
  • Effectively monitor students’ progress, identifying weaknesses and strengths and preparing a program to improve any deficiencies. Report achievements (grades) and academic problem areas in a timely manner as set by the Department Chair and/or the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/or VP for Academics.
  • Support school activities as a learning community by following school guidelines and procedures for all activities including but not limited to the following: spending guidelines, submitting self-evaluations, providing required data for assessment, proctoring state, and AP exams, writing letters of recommendation, and participating in meetings and other events.
  • Work with the Department Chair and/or the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/or VP for Academics to complete GSSM's employee evaluation and faculty growth procedures. As appropriate, support the school's mission as a learning community and provider of outreach programs to improve education.
  • All other duties assigned by the Department Chair and/or the Dean of Curriculum and/or the VP for Academics.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Master's degree in computer science, IT, or related field required and demonstrated successful teaching (10 years preferred), preferably teaching advanced students.

Additional Requirements

Excellent communication and motivational skills for high academic results with the target student population. Classroom and student management skills (computer entry, grading, etc.) Ability to work collaboratively in a virtual environment.

Please note that some areas of the Agency may require an official, certified copy of the transcript prior to hiring or within a specific timeframe required by that area after hiring. Failure to produce an official, certified transcript may result in not being hired or termination.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in subject area.
  • Experience with gifted high-school-aged students.
  • Experience teaching virtually.
