Description


UM Housing invites applications for a Journeyman Carpenter to assist with the total maintenance of 770 residential apartments and 9 residence halls. The person in this role performs skilled maintenance rough and finish carpentry as required to properly maintain the housing units.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities


  • Repair and construct wood articles
  • Install and repair floors - including carpet, vinyl and tile surfaces
  • Install and repair partitions, metal stalls, wood and metal cabinets, roofs, gutters
  • Perform counter top repair and replacement
  • Replace window glass and apply glazing, window screens, drapery and window coverings
  • Install various accessories related to residential units - i.e. mirrors, towel bars, closet rods
  • Hang sheetrock, any other work-related carpentry
  • Other maintenance areas as needed


  • Minimum Qualifications


    Knowledge of:
  • Approved methods, materials, equipment and tools used in rough and finish carpentry.
  • All safety rules and procedures related to the trade

  • Ability to:
  • Read and interpret blue prints and work form drawings, blue prints, and sketches
  • Be self-directed, work independently with minimal supervision, plan ahead, anticipate problems and coordinate multiple jobs simultaneously.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and members of the crafts
  • Possess and maintain a valid Montana driver's license
  • Operate lifts, fork lift, other heavy equipment related to carpentry


  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Locksmith certification or ability to acquire it
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Montana driver license

  • Physical Requirements
    (Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)
  • Lifting: Ground to 36 inches, up to 100 pounds. Ground to overhead, up to 50 pounds.
  • Carrying: Front carry up to 120 pounds for 10 feet or less. One hand carry, up to 80 pounds, for 10 feet or less.
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (during the use of tools): 100 pounds sustained.
  • Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Reaching with your arms in all directions, including overhead continuously, for at least 3 minutes.
  • Working in various positions (standing, squatting, kneeling, crouching, and crawling).
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder or scaffold, or personnel lift.
  • Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50 pounds of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 pounds).
  • Manual steadiness, dexterity, speed, and coordination:
  • Arm-Hand Steadiness - The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
  • Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • Wrist-Finger Speed - The ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.

  • Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.

    Position Number: 108020

    Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

    Probationary Period: Six (6) months minimum
