Position Details

Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

The Department of World Languages and Cultures ( WOLC ) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences ( CHSS ) seeks applications for a dynamic Lecturer of American Sign Language and/or Deaf Studies. The successful candidate will collaborate with program stakeholders in the ongoing development of SHSU’s rapidly growing ASL /Deaf Studies program.

The required teaching load is eight (8) courses annually and consists of teaching in-person at the SHSU main campus in Huntsville, Texas, as well as online and hybrid modalities in accordance with student needs. Course assignments will include ASL instruction from beginning to intermediate levels. Depending on educational qualifications and teaching experience, teaching may also include other subjects related to ASL and Deaf Studies. Additional duties may include committee assignments, recruitment activities, curriculum development, and community engagement.

Educational Requirements for the Position

Must have an M.A. in ASL, Deaf Studies, or a related field with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in American Sign Language and/or Deaf Studies. Candidates must demonstrate a high degree of competence in both productive and receptive ASL skills.

Experience Required for the Position

Documented history of teaching excellence in ASL and/or Deaf Studies courses.
Knowledge of best practices in ASL pedagogy.
Online/hybrid teaching experience and/or willingness to teach online/hybrid courses.
Native or near-native proficiency in ASL ( ASLPI level 4+ preferred).
Excellent bilingual communication skills.
Demonstrated success working collaboratively with a team.
Willingness to participate in and contribute to goals of the ASL and Deaf Studies program.

Other Requirements for the Position

Knowledge of and extensive personal/professional experiences within the Deaf community. Experience teaching first-generation and non-traditional student populations. Experience with curriculum and/or program development. Experience with community engagement and recruitment
