Assistant Professor in Korean Film

The School of International Letters & Cultures (SILC) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Korean Film, Media, and Performance Studies. The appointment will begin in August 2025.

We are particularly interested in scholars whose research focuses on Korean media and film, popular culture, theater and performance, and diasporas. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the expansion of the current curriculum on modern and contemporary Korea. The candidate will also collaborate with faculty in the East Asian section as well as across SILC to develop courses on transnational and interdisciplinary comparative topics that position Korean studies within broader regional and global currents in film, media, performance, and visual studies.

We seek a candidate who can play a pivotal role in the growth of the Korean section and who is committed to fostering inclusion and excellence in both research and education.

Essential Functions of the Position

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Design and teach two courses per semester in Korean film, popular culture, literature, and/or media studies at both undergraduate and graduate level. Contribute to curriculum development in the Korean section and SILC more broadly. Supervise honors, masters, and doctoral students. Conduct research and publish in top-tier journals and presses. Participate in professional and university service as appropriate for rank.

Required Qualifications:

• A Ph.D. in a Korean-related humanities field required by time of appointment. ABD candidates may be considered, but must have Ph.D. conferred by time of appointment. Proficient in both modern Korean and English. Evidence of effective teaching at the university level. Evidence of clear research agenda and scholarly publication trajectory.

Desired Qualifications:

• Research and teaching expertise in interdisciplinary, transnational East Asian and comparative topics Research and teaching expertise in a second Asian language and culture Ability to teach content courses in Korean Ability to use basic instructional technology (i.e., Blackboard, Canvas, etc.) Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students, and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.
