JOB SUMMARY:

Designing, developing, and implementing advanced control systems for power converters across unit-level and system-level architectures. Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to enhance the performance, efficiency, and scalability of converter control systems used in applications such as renewable energy systems, smart grids, electric vehicles, and industrial automation. Work closely with faculty, students, visiting scientists and industry partners engaged with Clemson's MV test facility.

JOB DUTIES:

50% - Essential - Develop AI-enhanced control strategies for power converters, focusing on unit-level control optimization and system-level integration. Design algorithms using AI/ML methods (such as neural networks, reinforcement learning, etc.) to improve converter performance, efficiency, fault tolerance, and grid interaction.

30% - Essential - Stay current with the latest trends in AI, ML, and power electronics, and apply emerging techniques to improve control systems. Seek competitive grant funding to expand the capabilities of the eGRID facility and actively pursue publications in peer-reviewed journals.

20% - Essential - Provide oversight, guidance and mentoring to student interns and/or graduate students. Ensure industry confidentiality, security of equipment and data. Build strong relationships with industry to further research and educational collaboration. Ensure all federal and state safety and environmental regulations and guidelines are followed at all times.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Doctoral Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Control Systems, or a related field.

Experience - 2+ years directly related to power converter design, control theory, and system-level integration. Proficiency in AI/ML algorithms, particularly as applied to control systems and optimization.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Experience - 1+ years modeling converters, T&D systems, P-HIL emulations. Hands-on experience with real-time control systems, DSPs, and FPGAs for converter implementation is preferred.

Certification: EIT (Engineer in Training License/Certification)

COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Band: 00 ($83,200.00 - $125,000.00)




Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL

Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
