Position Purpose

To participate as part of a decision making team (coaching staff) under the direction of the head coach in planning, coaching, recruiting, administering, and promoting the men’s soccer program within NCAA, Ivy League, and institutional standards. The Assistant Coach plays a critical role in achieving the overall goals of the men’s soccer program by providing important recommendations, suggestions and decisions regarding game strategies, line-ups, priority listing of recruits, etc. as well as offering initiative and independent judgment (e.g., in providing coaching instruction, evaluating and communicating with prospective recruits and their parents, and representing the men’s soccer program to constituents).

Description

The Dartmouth College men’s soccer program, known as the Big Green, has a rich history dating back to 1915. Competing in NCAA Division I and the Ivy League, the team has made numerous NCAA Tournament appearances and won several Ivy League championships.

Bachelors plus 6 or more years' experience or combination of education and experience

  • Strong knowledge of soccer skills and strategies.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in a diverse community.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to recruit effectively with no athletic grants and highly selective admissions standards.
  • Strong commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a large and diverse population.
  • Current driver’s license required.

Description

Coaching/Mentoring
  • Contributes suggestions and recommendations to planning and implementing the training, conditioning and coaching programs for the Men’s Soccer team.
  • Assists head coach in conducting team practices, training, conditioning, and competitions.
  • Prepare scouting reports and game plans for opponents.
  • During competition, makes recommendations to the head coach regarding adjustments to game plans and line-ups.
  • Teaches soccer skills to student-athletes in one or more specialty areas (e.g., goalies, defenders, midfield, forwards) to student-athletes during team practices, games, and individual/small group training sessions.
  • Evaluates performance of athletes and offers technical, strategical, and mental instruction and advice.
  • Demonstrates a sincere interest in the academic, personal, and physical welfare of each student-athlete; counsel team members and consult with the head coach and appropriate College staff as necessary for the resolution of issues.
  • Independently seeks and develops new training concepts and sport specific knowledge to enhance the overall knowledge the coaching staff.

Recruiting
  • Participates in the development and implementation of an overall recruiting plan, including but not limited to, determining program needs by position, selecting recruiting events to attend, and setting admissions priorities.
  • Assists with identifying qualified students and talented athletes; communicating with prospects by phone, mail, e-mail, traveling to evaluate prospects; meeting parents and high school coaches; organizing and participating in visits to campus by prospects.
  • Maintains appropriate recruiting records as required by the NCAA .
  • Maintains knowledge of the College’s programs and opportunities to effectively inform prospects.

Administration
  • Knows and complies with the rules and regulations of the NCAA and Ivy League, and work to stay abreast of rule changes, applications and interpretations
  • Actively seek to ensure that athletes and athletics representatives are informed of and comply with NCAA and Ivy League rules.
  • Assists the head coach in planning and administering the budget for the men’s soccer program which includes assessing needs for equipment, team travel, recruiting, etc.
  • Plans and reconciles recruiting travel expenses.
  • Assists head coach in planning and developing competitive schedule.
  • Assists head coach in coordinating team travel and reconciles recruiting and team travel expenses.
  • Assists the head coach in keeping alumni, parents and supporters informed of the program’s status through newsletters, brochures, talks, etc.
