Academic Advisor & Assistant Learning Specialist

Department: Student Learning Center - 202120

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution
  • One to three years of experience in an educational setting, with responsibilities including administration of learning assessments, development of academic support plans, working with academically at-risk students, collaboration with academic support professionals, and supervising experience
  • Knowledge of formal and informal diagnostic and assessment instruments and techniques for academic and career testing
  • Experience working with students in a college setting, preferably athletics, and a demonstrated commitment to the educational development of students
  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as outstanding organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Exhibits energy, enthusiasm, a positive approach to work, attention to detail and accuracy, and a strong work ethic
  • Ability to establish excellent rapport with students, colleagues and the campus community
  • Exhibits a high level of ethics, integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism
  • A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered


License/Certification Required


Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-5 years working with student athletes
  • Experience working in athletics compliance/eligibility or athletics academics support or transfer articulation
  • Advanced technology skills and experience with the ability to quickly learn technical advising tools including Banner, DegreeWorks, JumpForward, Teamworks


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Academic Services for Student Athletes connects to the University's mission and that of University College by providing holistic advising from orientation to graduation for Appalachian State University's Division I student-athletes. The services provided allow and encourage students to develop necessary academic/life skills in areas such as time management, personal accountability, collaboration and goal setting. The program assists students in balancing the demands of academics and athletics in a college environment. Academic Services for Student Athletes is committed to assisting students' develop as leaders in the classroom, in their sport, on campus, and in the community. Academic Services for Student Athletes is committed to providing accuracy in the information regarding curricula and degree requirements, university policies, and compliance to NCAA required eligibility standards and by-laws.

Duties and Responsibilities of this position include:
Learning Specialist- 60%
Duties related to the Learning Specialist role include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assist with educational screenings and assessments of incoming student-athletes to determine individual learning needs and appropriate academic strategies
  • Develop and implement individualized academic support plans for identified student-athletes to address topics such as goal-setting, time management, organization, academic success strategies, and self-advocacy skills
  • Coordinate academic support plans for an assigned caseload of student-athletes with their academic support team, which includes Academic Advisors, tutors, Graduate Assistants
  • Monitor academic progress for student-athletes in assigned caseloads and communicate regularly with members of the academic support team
  • Coordinate referrals to University academic support and campus resources


Study Hall CoordinatorDuties related to the coordination of the study hall program include but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinate with advising staff to determine the study hall services for each student-athlete
  • Coordinate the hiring, training and staffing of undergraduate study hall monitors
  • Coordinate all study hall communications with student-athletes and ASA Staff
  • Manage student-athlete attendance records using TracCloud system
  • Create and distribute weekly attendance reports
Other ResponsibilitiesIn addition to the responsibilities above, the Learning Specialist will supervise evening/Sunday study halls (as needed)
  • Assist with schedule coordination of ASA's Internship/Practicum program
  • Help develop and implement service delivery procedures, including documentation, in compliance with relevant legislation and policies. (These include but are not limited to: FERPA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act, NCAA and Sun Belt Conference bylaws, legislation and regulations)
  • Demonstrate commitment to and compliance with the University's and Department of Athletics policies and procedures as well as the Sun Belt Conference, NCAA constitutions, bylaws, legislation and regulations
  • Maintain confidential student records, in compliance with relevant legislation and policies
  • Demonstrate commitment to academic integrity, and teach and model this commitment to students

Advisor responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following: 40%
  • Serve as a mentor and resource to student athletes, and make appropriate referrals, as needed.
  • Assist with orientation for all new student athletes in their caseload.
  • Demonstrates commitment to and compliance with the University's and Department of Athletics policies and procedures as well as the Sun Belt conference and NCAA constitutions, bylaws, legislation and regulations.
  • Assist assigned sport coaches in providing academic information to prospective students and their parents and with on campus recruiting efforts.
  • Establishes and maintains collegial, respectful relationships with colleagues, students, parents and families and appreciates and encourages diversity.
  • Keep current on NCAA eligibility standards, monitor student athlete eligibility, and communicate eligibility requirements with students and coaches.
  • Keeps accurate records of student contacts, documents student visits for accountability purposes, and maintains confidentiality.
  • Keep current on curricular and policy changes that affect advising services to student athletes.
  • Assist with data collection for reports, including Academic Progress rate, Graduation Success rate and Annual Report.
  • Attend monthly compliance meetings with team Administrators, Compliance and coaching staff.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with faculty, coaches and administrators, and serve as an advocate for student athletes. The position requires some evening and weekend work.
  • Monitors all students in the caseload who are on academic probation.
  • All advisors are expected to stay abreast of university academic policies and procedures and the Department of Athletics policies and procedures as well.
  • Assists with special projects as deemed appropriate by the Director.


Work Schedule/Hours:Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Could Require Nights and Weekends as needed
Suggested Salary Range: $48,000 to $55,000
