Assistant/Associate/Senior Cooperative Education Coordinator - Multidisciplinary Graduate Engineering - Arlington

About the Opportunity

Northeastern University is a national leader in cooperative education in which students alternate between academic study and work experiences. While the College of Engineering has had a robust program for undergraduates, the co-op program for graduate engineering students is relatively new. This rapid expansion now requires more support to continue developing and growing the program. This is a full time, non-tenure track faculty position, primarily working with students in the College of Engineering's Multidisciplinary Graduate Engineering (MGEN) Department on the Arlington, VA campus.

The MGEN Cooperative Education Program at Northeastern University is committed to equal opportunity and affirmative action while building a climate of belonging on and beyond campus. In research and teaching environments, members of the University community work to cultivate an environment of belonging that denounces discrimination through innovation, collaboration and an awareness of global perspectives on social justice. We welcome individuals of all ages, backgrounds, beliefs, ethnicities, genders, gender identities, gender expressions, national origins, religious affiliations, sexual orientations, socioeconomic background, family education level, ability - and other visible and nonvisible differences.

Specific responsibilities include:

Employer Relations/Job Development: The Assistant Co-op Coordinator is expected to develop partnerships with employers by working with executive, supervisory and human resources contacts; develop new and maintain ongoing co-op positions and make appropriate referrals for students to apply to these positions; maintain a current understanding of the industry/field, employers, and positions.

Activities to support this endeavor include site visits to new and existing employers, follow up communications, and continued efforts to develop new and enhance current relationships with employers.

Preparation of Students: The Assistant Co-op Coordinator will prepare students for the co-op search and work experience, both by teaching co-op related courses each semester and through individual advising meetings. Preparation includes teaching tools appropriate for co-op search (interviewing skills, resume writing, LinkedIn, professional behavior, and job search tools) as well as career foundations topics (such as ethics, mindset, mindfulness, and motivation). They will be the primary point of contact for a large group of students in preparing for co-op and while on co-op. The coordinator will collaborate with college faculty, administration, and other co-op coordinators to help students integrate their co-op and academic education and share knowledge of the industry with academic faculty to integrate work-based learning with curriculum-based learning.

Service: They will also perform co-op, departmental, college, and university service as agreed upon by the Coordinator and Assistant Dean for the MGEN Department of the College of Engineering. Further, he/she/they will be encouraged to engage in service opportunities outside the University to enhance the reputation of the co-op program and the University.

Qualifications:

A master's degree in higher education administration, engineering, business administration, or a related field is required, and a minimum of three years of professional work experience is desired. Substantial use of technology tools is required, and excellent written and oral communication skills are expected. Experience working with staff/student populations and international students. Experience in working with engineers in a Human Resources setting is also valuable. Knowledge of cooperative education is a plus.

Application must include (1) a detailed cover letter describing your interest in this position, how your experience relates to it, and how you could contribute to the further development and growth of cooperative education for students in the Graduate School of Engineering at Northeastern; (2) resume; (3) names and contact information of at least three references.
