Assistant Teaching Professor/ Associate Teaching Professor/ Full Teaching Professor

About the Opportunity

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities and its nine tenure units are the home of the Experiential Liberal Arts. Through its research, teaching, and engagement missions, the college collaborates across the university, the Northeastern network, and partners around the globe. We are strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcome nominations and applications from members of groups underrepresented in academia. Successful faculty in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities will be dynamic and innovative scholars with a record of research and teaching excellence and a commitment to improved equity, diversity, and inclusion. Strong candidates for this position will have the expertise, knowledge, and skills to build their research, pedagogy, and curriculum in ways that reflect and enhance this commitment.

The Writing Program at Northeastern University seeks to fill two open-rank faculty positions at the non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor or Full Teaching Professor levels, beginning in fall 2025.

The NU Writing Program is an award-winning program that serves first-year and upper-level students and includes more than 70 full-time, part-time, post-doctoral, and graduate student teachers. New Teaching Professors will design and teach Advanced Writing in the Disciplines courses, including writing for the sciences, engineering, computer science, and business professions. In addition to experience teaching disciplinary writing, applicants are encouraged to have experience and expertise working with Multilingual Writers. The program values instructor autonomy and does not work from common syllabi or required texts, but instead shares 12 student learning goals. Northeastern Teaching Professors also have access to professional development funding and a variety of professional development activities.

While the need to teach an occasional course remotely (online) may occur, the position is in residence at Northeastern's Boston campus. The successful candidate will also contribute to student advising and other departmental service responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

Full-time teaching load is six courses for the academic year (three courses in each semester). In addition to teaching, Teaching Professors are expected to serve on various department, college, and university committees and to pursue professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree in Rhetoric and Composition or related field in hand by the employment start date is required.
  • Candidates should provide evidence of teaching excellence, including student evaluations and sample course materials.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments inside and outside of the classroom as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education.

Documents to Submit:

Applicants should submit a cover letter that addresses the applicant's interest in and qualifications for the position, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, diversity statement, and the names and contact information for at least three individuals who can provide a letter of recommendation.

In the diversity statement, please describe how you can support Northeastern's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Describe how your teaching, service, research, and/or leadership (as applicable) have supported the success of students and/or colleagues; and/or describe the impact others have had on you as relating to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Review of applications will begin on February 1, 2025 and will continue until the position is filled.
