Assistant Teaching Professor/ Associate Teaching Professor/ Full Teaching Professor
About the Opportunity
The College of Social Sciences and Humanities and its nine tenure units are the home of the Experiential Liberal Arts. Through its research, teaching, and engagement missions, the college collaborates across the university, the Northeastern network, and partners around the globe. We are strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcome nominations and applications from members of groups underrepresented in academia. Successful faculty in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities will be dynamic and innovative scholars with a record of research and teaching excellence and a commitment to improved equity, diversity, and inclusion. Strong candidates for this position will have the expertise, knowledge, and skills to build their research, pedagogy, and curriculum in ways that reflect and enhance this commitment.
Responsibilities:
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology seeks to fill a non-tenure track job opening for an Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, or Full Teaching Professor in the areas of introductory sociology, research methods, social theory, and other courses according to the candidate's interests. Duties include a teaching load of six courses for the academic year (three courses each semester) and ongoing curricular and pedagogical innovation. The successful candidate will have evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level in introductory sociology, research methods, and/or social theory. Experience in experiential learning is a plus given Northeastern's practice-oriented education model. While the need to teach an occasional course remotely (online) may occur, the position is in residence at Northeastern's Boston campus. Opportunities for summer teaching for additional compensation may be available. The successful candidate will also contribute to student advising and other departmental service responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related field in hand by the employment start date is required.
- Candidates should provide evidence of teaching excellence, including student evaluations and sample course materials.
- Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments inside and outside of the classroom, as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern education.
Documents to Submit:
Applicants should submit a cover letter that addresses the applicant's interest in and qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, a teaching portfolio (including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, and student course evaluations), a diversity statement, and the names and contact information for at least three individuals who can provide a letter of recommendation. Candidates should not submit letters until requested.
In the diversity statement, please describe how you can support Northeastern's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Describe how your teaching, service, research, and/or leadership (as applicable) has supported the success of students and/or colleagues; and/or describe the impact others have had on you as relating to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Review of applications will begin on January 31, 2025 and will continue until the position is filled.
