Job Description

The Ellmer School of Nursing at Old Dominion University invites qualified advanced practice registered nurses with certification as a nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist to apply for a full-time, 10-month, open rank faculty position in our graduate nursing program to start July 25, 2025. We are building a diverse faculty and searching for a faculty member who will share and contribute to our mission to transform healthcare by:
  • Preparing exceptional nurses.
  • Extending nursing science.
  • Partnering with our global community.
Faculty responsibilities will include didactic and clinical instruction in our advanced practice graduate nursing programs. Courses are offered year round; thus, faculty will be required to have a summer teaching contract. Participation in scholarship will round out the faculty member’s workload.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
  1. An earned doctoral degree in Nursing or related field
  2. A current, unrestricted license as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or eligible for unrestricted licensure).
  3. A current, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.


Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities
  1. Recent clinical practice experience with expertise as an Advanced Practice nurse.
  2. Demonstrated expertise in Nurse Knowledge and Clinical Practice.
  3. Strong communication skills.
  4. Functions as an effective, active, and collegial team member
  5. Demonstrated computer skills using web-based applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
  6. Competence in use of technology in teaching and distance learning.
  7. Commitment to growth of diversity, equity and inclusion in and beyond the Ellmer School of Nursing.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching in a graduate nursing program.
  • Didactic teaching experience.
  • Familiarity with online/web-enhanced formats and simulations.

About the Department

The Ellmer School of Nursing, located at the Higher Education Center in Virginia Beach, VA has an average enrollment of nearly 700 students including 18% African American, 9% Asian, 2% Latino and 8% males. The undergraduate nursing program has a pre-licensure track and a distance post-licensure program with a total enrollment of 350 students annually. NCLEX -RN® pass rates are consistently 90% or higher. The graduate nursing program consists of 8 MSN concentrations and 3 DNP concentrations, and certification pass rates for advanced practice graduates are on average around 90%, ranking ODU as one of the best schools in Virginia.
