Job Description

Old Dominion University ( ODU ) invites nominations and applications for Clinical Assistant Professor of Athletic Training within the School of Rehabilitation Sciences in the Ellmer College of Health Sciences, appointment effective July 25, 2025. The position is an annual, 10-month full-time faculty position, though there are additional opportunities for paid summer course instruction.

The position expectations include instruction of courses in the professional athletic training program as the fourth faculty member of the program. The Master of Science of Athletic Training program graduated their first professional cohort in 2021 after 40 years of success hosting a post-professional Master’s degree program. The appointee will also be responsible for collaboratively mentoring and contributing to MSAT student original research projects. Academic leadership opportunities are available for interested and qualified applicants.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
  1. An earned doctorate in a health-related discipline. Candidates whose degrees will be conferred before the start of the appointment will be considered.
  2. Certification and good standing with the Board of Certification as an Athletic Trainer.
  3. Licensed or eligibility for licensure as an Athletic Trainer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.


Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

Candidates must have contemporary expertise in the field of athletic training, including expertise in areas complimentary to the existing faculty in the school, and previous clinical practice as an Athletic Trainer.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous full-time academic appointment with teaching responsibilities at the post-secondary level in a professional athletic training program.
  • Developing line of research with previous publication history.
  • Mentorship of graduate student research.
  • Familiarity with the 2020 CAATE Standards and the accreditation process.
  • Experience with centralized application services (e.g. ATCAS, PTCAS, OTCAS ).

About the Department

in Addition to the MSAT Program, the School of Rehabilitation Sciences offers a Doctor of Physical Therapy program, a Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, an undergraduate Recreational Therapy program, and participates in a college-wide Kinesiology and Rehabilitation doctoral program. ODU recently merged with Eastern Virginia Medical School to form the new Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences.
