Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory research projects. Performs work independently and responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards maybe present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and equipment, and for ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
- The position is to probe the mechanism of P-glycoprotein, a protein involved the multidrug-resistance of cancers, purify mutant enzymes for structure-function analyses and examine the polyspecific drug binding sites.
- The project involves techniques such as biochemistry, molecular biology, yeast cell culture, enzymology and biophysical methods, and will have the opportunity to expose to state-of-the-art techniques.
- The successful applicant must be familiar with the P-glycoprotein literature, self-motivated, enthusiastic and highly devoted.

Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in site-directed mutagenesis, yeast transformations, drug resistance assays, membrane protein purifications and ATPase activity assays.
- Experience with tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence quenching and lifetime analysis as well as protein labeling with cysteine-specific fluorescence probes and LRET techniques is desirable.
