Pay Range

The compensation for this appointment will range from $68,640 annually and reflects what California Baptist University reasonably expects to pay for this staff appointment. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications and experience of the applicant, as well as market conditions. In addition to wages, CBU offers a robust suite of employee benefits.

Position Summary Information

Summary

The Director of Student Publications, Broadcast provides leadership in promoting the mission of the University through the management and oversight of the Broadcast and Digital Media Publications. This position will oversee all aspects of these publications: advising the publications, promoting the publications, and shared support of the CBU Studio .

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership Responsibilities
1. Support the University’s mission and goals, the continuous quality improvement process and embrace a broad institutional view.
2. Serve as a team member and lead through service and modeling.
3. Build consensus between administration and faculty, respecting lines of communication and authority as set forth by the University.
4. Provide leadership in developing or maintaining national and/or state accreditation for professional programs if applicable.
5. With Department Chair, assist the Offices of Admissions and Marketing and Communication in recruiting students and assist the Director of Student Retention in retaining students.
6. Establish and maintain relationships with external constituencies, obtain grants, and solicit gifts from donors in cooperation with the Chair and/or Dean and Institutional Advancement.
7. Participate in University events.
8. Understand and enforce guidelines and policies set forth in the Employee Manual.

Administrative Responsibilities
1. Oversee and manage the operations of the Broadcast Publications.
2. Work collaboratively to support the CBU Studio and programs represented.
3. Schedule Studio hours for classes and praticum work in conjunction with program partners.
4. Maintain and grow the Broadcast and Digital Media Production degree and publications.
5. Work with the student leaders in the production of these campus publications.
6. Oversee the broadcast submissions for CBU culture and value fit when reviewing student work.
7. Oversee the editing and revision process on all broadcast and digital media publications.
8. Attend all weekly all-staff publication meetings, bi-weekly editorial board meetings, and any publication-specific meetings, as necessary.
9. Attend evening meetings, and weekend events, and travel with students as needed.
10. Connect with and speak at local high schools to promote LMG and the broadcast and digital media journalism program.
11. Assist with the development of a summer workshop/academy program for high school and middle school students.
12. Help maintain the annual calendar for the campus publications that schedules each publication’s events, deadlines, and functions.
13. Review and select materials to submit for award consideration at various conferences.
14. Oversee the distribution of the campus broadcast publications to the various constituents and outlets.
15. Lead the student recruitment for broadcast and digital media publications.
16. Manage the administrative duties related to the campus broadcast publications, including liaising with vendors, guests, etc.
17. Seek areas of growth for the broadcast publications, staying current with broadcast and digital media trends.
18. Oversee the checking out broadcast equipment for students working on the broadcast publications and train students workers on equipment.
19. Complete all requested reports in a timely fashion.
20. Communicate effectively with the Dean’s/Department Chair’s Office regarding student issues, academic and University policy, and other matters.
21. Interpret University policies and requirements as they apply to the program.
22. Assist students with concerns and make appropriate recommendations for resolution.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position could assign work and/or give direction to part-time Student Workers to complete work assignments.

  • Understanding of excellent publication principles, including writing, photography, editing, and layout/design, including the use of publication software.
  • Ability to work with students in producing excellent campus publications.
  • Ability to coach writers, photographers, and editors in the production of excellent stories, photos, and multimedia presentations.
  • Ability to coach the writing of news stories and feature articles for publication, including editing principles and mastery of Associated Press journalistic style.
  • Ability to coach the taking of photos for publication with knowledge of photo composition, photography equipment, and editing photos for publication, including the use of editing software.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related publication software applications.
  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions, and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.
  • A thorough knowledge of business English and arithmetic; general office methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to use independent judgment, and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and conflict-resolution skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Ability to supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Strong initiative, organizational skills, and eye for detail.
  • Knowledge of standard budgeting and expenditure control procedures, and documentation.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; and requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard or other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers; and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate in person or over the phone. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT : The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment, with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
