For both HR Benefits Analyst, Intermediate and Senior levels:
- This position is a hybrid position which allows the incumbent to complete their work at both an NAU site, campus, or facility and at a non-centralized site with or without accommodation.
- This position is posted as HR Benefits Analyst, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Human Resources Analyst.
Job Description
The NAU Human Resources Benefits team is seeking one (1) Benefits Analyst, Intermediate or one (1) Benefits Analyst, Senior. The selected incumbent will be determined by the experience and qualifications of candidate.
HR Benefits Analyst, Intermediate:
Under the direction of the Benefits Manager, this position performs professional level HR administration in supporting the area of benefits and ensuring the smooth operation of various processes and programs. The Benefits Analyst, Intermediate will join the Benefits team by supporting the employee benefits programs including health, dental, life, disability, retirement, time-off, tuition reduction and workers' compensation to ensure employee coverage. Educates employees on plans and options, supporting an understanding of programs along with their seamless implementation. Manages and updates employee data in human resources information system, ensuring accurate enrollment of employees in benefit coverage.
Customer Service - 25%
- Provide customer service, general benefits education, and problem resolution for a broad range of benefits issues.
- Provide general counsel to employees on benefits programs.
- Conduct data analysis and research in the customer service function and in resolution of problems.
- Provide formal and informal presentations including orientation about benefit programs as needed/requested by supervisor.
- Assist with special events such as open enrollments and benefit fairs.
- Coordinate with other university departments on benefits-related issues and events.
Vendor Liaison - 20%
- Liaison with vendors and state entities, providing appropriate employee data, working to resolve employee/vendor/state problems, and maintaining cooperative NAU/vendor/state relationships.
- Transfers data files to vendors. Resolves eligibility file errors.
Data Input - 20%
- Perform data input into a computerized human resources information system (PeopleSoft) to establish and update employee records and benefits information.
- Process daily event maintenance in Benefits Administration function of PeopleSoft; evaluate and correct errors.
- Manage and process new hire enrollments and qualified life event changes.
- Process various payroll reports to ensure payroll is closed in a timely manner with accurate data.
- Resolve enrollment issues in PeopleSoft. Update benefit set up tables in PeopleSoft.
Special Projects - 15%
- Data cleanup.
- Records retention.
- Process improvement.
- Compliance with laws and regulations, policy changes, and committee assignments.
- Serves as backup for COBRA enrollment and related correspondence.
- Prepare reports to management on benefits-related topics.
- Manage the online Employee Tuition Reduction Program requests process.
General HR Support - 15%
- Provides general administrative support to various HR functions as needed.
- Provides general project support within HR for a variety of project, initiatives, and general department needs.
- Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs in HR functional areas.
- Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources areas.
- Provides exceptional customer service to inquirers orally and/or in writing; resolves questions and inquiries to promote employee understanding of HR programs.
- Handles sensitive employee information in accordance with established procedures, policies, and applicable laws.
Other - 5%
- Other duties as assigned.
HR Benefits Analyst, Senior:
Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Benefits, this position performs professional level HR administration in supporting the area of benefits and ensuring the smooth operation of various employee benefit processes and programs. The Benefits Analyst, Senior will join the Benefits team by supporting the administration and maintenance of NAU's staff retirement and leave of absence programs and processes.
Collaboration/ Consultation - 40%
- General benefits education and counseling for employees, including preparing written material for employee and retiree correspondence, and assisting the manager with information for web pages and training materials.
- Collaborating with special events such as open enrollments, benefit fairs and workshops.
- Working in conjunction with other university departments on benefits related issues and events.
Problem Solving - 25%
- Troubleshooting and resolving issues in the following benefits
areas:
- life insurance claims processing.
- over/underpayment cases and leave accrual reconciliation.
- full scope of benefits records/transaction processing including PeopleSoft analysis/entry/audit.
General HR Support - 20%
- Provides general administrative support to various HR functions as needed.
- Provides general project support within HR for a variety of project, initiatives, and general department needs.
- Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs in HR functional areas.
- Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources areas.
- Provides exceptional customer service to inquirers orally and/or in writing; resolves questions and inquiries to promote employee understanding of HR programs.
- Handles sensitive employee information in accordance with established procedures, policies, and applicable laws.
Data/Reporting - 10%
- Conducting data analysis and applying results of research and interpretation of retirement and other benefits related laws, regulations, and policies in the course of responding to inquiries and resolving problems.
- Preparing reports to management on benefits related topics.
- Assisting with relevant, benefits related payroll processing, including generation and resolution of error reports, assisting team members with research of challenging cases, and other related duties as necessary.
Other - 5%

Minimum Qualifications
HR Benefits Analyst, Intermediate:
- Requires an Associates or Bachelor's degree in relevant field.
- 3 years of relevant human resources experience.
- A combination of related education, experience and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.
HR Benefits Analyst, Senior:
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field.
- 4 years of relevant human resources experience.
- A combination of related education, experience and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
HR Benefits Analyst, Intermediate:
- Prior experience in benefits.
- Previous human resources experience in a higher education environment.
HR Benefits Analyst, Senior:
- Prior experience in classification benefits roles.
- Previous human resources experience in a higher education environment.

Background Information
This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary
HR Benefits Analyst, Intermediate:
- Anticipated salary range is $51,000 - $63,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
HR Benefits Analyst, Senior:
- Anticipated salary range is $58,882 - $73,434. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
Benefits
This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
