Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY
The Lubin Lab in the Microbiology & Immunology Division of the Department of Pathology is seeking an enthusiastic and talented researcher to join our newly established lab.

The Lubin Lab is dedicated to advancing the understanding of how the intersection of diet and microbial metabolism in the infant microbiome impacts neonatal infection and immunity. Our research is highly interdisciplinary, incorporating microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, bioinformatics and immunology. This provides an excellent avenue for the introduction into the microbiome field for many backgrounds.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Performs and directs specialized and complex lab tests, experiments and surgical procedures for studies.
  2. Assists the Principal Investigator in the design, implementation and performance of new protocols and procedures as well as the modification of existing techniques.
  3. Reviews scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information concerning experimental procedures.
  4. Makes advanced statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing research results.
  5. Operates complex and highly specialized laboratory and surgical instruments and equipment. Instructs others in their use.
  6. Maintains a log of supplies used in procedures.
  7. Supervise, train and review the work of laboratory personnel.
  8. May assist with preparing budgets.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:Nearly Continuously: Laboratory environment.Often: Exposure to animals, hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working at high places, or exposure to chemicals). .
Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing and pipetting), walking, standing, sitting.Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.

Preferences
PREFERENCES
The ideal candidate should have strong organizational skills, experience in animal husbandry (mice), microbial culturing techniques and general molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, SDS-PAGE). Previous experience in cell culturing and/or flow cytometry is a plus.
