Description

The S chool of Visual and Media Arts, in the College of the Arts and Media at the University of Montana invites applicants for an Assistant Clinical Professor in Contemporary Art History and Critical Theory, starting fall 2025. This position focuses on teaching and service, with no research expectations.

Relocation to Missoula, Montana is required.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in contemporary art and art criticism with an emphasis on the history and theory of game design, animation, sound and digital media, performance, and interactive art. Candidates with a background or experience in Indigenous art and/or visual culture will be given priority. Additional teaching will be assigned according to the candidate’s research and creative scholarly expertise.

Responsibilities

· Teach a mix of 3-credit courses totaling 24 credits per year.

· Develop and implement new courses related to their area of expertise focusing on inclusiveness.

· Contribute to the curricular assessment and ongoing development at the course and program levels.

· Take an active role in undergraduate faculty mentorship.

· Mentor individual graduate students in the MFA programs.

· Participate in service to the Program, Department, School, College, University, and field.

Position Details

Title: Assistant Clinical Professor in Art History and Critical Theory
Schedule: Full time academic year position beginning fall semester 2025

Salary: $50,000 - $55,000 annually commensurate with qualifications

Qualifications

· Ph.D. in Art History; ABD with expected completion within 6 months considered

· Expertise in the contemporary art history and critical theory

· Potential for effective teaching and mentoring

· Ability to work collegially with students, staff, and faculty

· Ability to be creative, resourceful, fair, compassionate, and show initiative
