Job Description:

Summary:

The position of the Barista includes preparing beverages and other menu items, working the register, ensuring the cleanliness of the space as well as assisting staff when events are occurring in the space. This person should be able to maintain a calm demeanor during busy and unforeseen situations and should be flexible in hours and responsibilities while in the position.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and sell menu items by following recipes and preparation techniques for all beverages, such as espresso drinks, lattes, cappuccinos, hot and iced teas, etc.

  • Maintain inventories by replenishing supplies.

  • Communicate with student manager about the needs of the space, including but not limited to materials and support.

  • Assist with events in the space.

  • Maintain a friendly work environment with staff.

  • Ensure the space is clean and free from excess trash, as well as keep the furniture organized and in proper formation.

  • Deliver exemplary customer service to all students, staff, faculty, and visitors.

  • Maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events to keep cafe operating smoothly and to set a positive example for coworkers and peers.

  • Follow all procedures for cash handling and security to ensure safety for all staff.

Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work:
  • Part-Time.

  • 8-20 hours weekly, between 7:30 AM - 11:30 PM, Sunday-Friday.

  • The Bridge Cafe, Butler 2nd Level.

Compensation:
  • $17.50 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Successful candidates must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.

  • Must be currently enrolled at American University with a valid AU email account.

  • Must be able to lift items weighing up to 25 pounds.

  • Flexibility to work days, nights, and weekends for a total of 10-15 hours per week.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations including students, staff, faculty, and visitors.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • It is recommended but not required that you have previous customer service and/or food service experience.
