Position Description:
IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society’s (IEEE AP-S) Digital Communications Editor in Chief is searching for a Director of Digital Communications. This position will be for 3 years, and will be housed within the VCU College of Engineering.
Since its inception in 1996, the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprising five different departments plus the Dean’s office, the College of Engineering enrolls more than 1,700 undergraduate and 250 graduate students in several degree programs supported by approximately 600 full-time, part-time, and student employees. Reporting to the Editor in Chief, the position of Director of Digital Communications for the AP-S Society will be responsible for:
- Planning, scheduling, recording, and editing interviews conducted by IEEE AP-S Digital Communications Editor in Chief with enterprise leaders, scientists, program directors, students, and AP Society leadership to support content development.
- Serving as a trusted resource for AP-S officers, administrative team, web manager, Journal Editors, and volunteers in assisting with their development of effective communications strategies.
- Playing a leading role in developing and disseminating key messages for strategic AP-S initiatives.
- Helping to ensure that messaging is consistent throughout proposals, case materials, publications, and other communications vehicles. Regularly planning, scheduling, and creating an email-based newsletter for AP-S members.
- Collaborating with colleagues in other IEEE Societies to disseminate key messages through various channels.
- Overseeing a digital repository system for AP-S members' projects and resources.
- Manage AP-S LinkedIn account, AP-S YouTube account, and may participate in videos/live events/interviews.
- Working with the website management team to update and verify website information for accuracy and completeness.
- Travel to/from interview locations, conference locations, and meeting locations as necessary. Responsible for packing and maintaining AP-S recording equipment.
- This position will also help edit electronic and printed
materials relevant to the college’s marketing and public relations
efforts.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- BS degree in communications, marketing, engineering or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- High comfort level of writing about technical subjects
- Excellent anticipatory skills and initiative
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong ability to manage workflow
- Experience planning, scheduling, and organizing teams
- A professional demeanor. Resourceful and solution oriented.

- BS degree in communications, marketing, engineering or a related field
- Experience managing digital and print communications strategies
- Experience working in higher education is desirable
