The Hampton University High Performance Computing (HPC) Clusters Manager handles the development of HPC clusters, cloud implementation, data storage and transfer services for fundamental, sensitive, and secure computing systems. The Manager regularly engages with Academic units, and research leadership on institutional-wide strategy and investments, and builds and maintains relationships with the faculty and the various stakeholders. The HPC Cluster Manager must give great attention to detail and accuracy, be able to prioritize a diverse set of tasks, have excellent oral and written communication skills, and conduct him/herself in a professional manner.
**This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon the continuation of related grant funding.

Qualifications:
- Master’s or PhD degree in related field
- Experience working in a university and with High Performance Computing clusters and with storage systems
- Experience working with sensitive and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) data
- Experience scripting for system management, monitoring, and task automation in support of Continuous Integration (CI) systems
- Broad knowledge of deployment and management of High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, including CPU, GPU, storage, file systems, networking, visualization, job schedulers and scientific applications
- Demonstrated knowledge of GPU, parallel, and distributed computing
- Understanding of data security and compliance standards and regulations such as DEFARS, NIST 800-171/53
- Experience or knowledge in supporting cloud-based computing platforms
- Demonstrated consulting and customer service skills and be comfortable directly interacting and facilitating research with university faculty, students, and staff across the various academic disciplines
- Must be a US Citizen
- Terminal degree in a related field
- Experience managing a High-Performance Computing program working in a university setting
- Project management experience
- Experience with machine learning and deep learning technologies such as TensorFlow and PyTorch
- Experience developing dashboards, reports, and summaries of health service for HPC clusters, storage, and GPUs; and familiarity with virtualization technologies and container orchestration (Singularity/Apptainer, Docker etc.)
Leadership
- Develops mission, vision, and strategy for local CI services in alignment with the strategic vision of the University
- Focuses on operational effectiveness and sustainability of the HPC cluster
- Envisions new systems and solutions to drive efficiencies of research teams and recommends changes to existing processes when appropriate to support research initiatives
- Collaborate with university stakeholders to identify emerging trends and technologies in research computing and data, develop strategies to leverage these new technologies for research capabilities
- Assists with grant proposals for sponsored opportunities that will promote/enhance research computing systems
- Represents the university in regional and national research computing consortiums.
- Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of HU research cyberinfrastructure to support diverse research needs
- Ensures the security, reliability, and scalability of research computing infrastructure to meet the demands of current and future research projects; develops and implements policies and procedures governing the use of research computing resources, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards
- Establishes and maintains user support mechanisms to assist researchers in effectively utilizing computing resources
- Creates infrastructure roadmaps, provides budget projections for the cyberinfrastructure investments; and writes proposals for funding hardware cyberinfrastructure and personnel
- Recruits and develops a team that can keep up with the pace of researchers needs including the secure research requirements.
- Builds and maintains relationships with various stakeholders (professors, researchers, staff, government agencies, vendors)
- Regularly engages with HU academic units and research leadership on institutional-wide strategy and investments.
- Regularly provides reports/metrics to stakeholders regarding usage, growth, and changes to cyberinfrastructure services
- Defines and tracks return on investment.
