The Division of Art History in the University of Arizona’s School of Art invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor with a research and teaching expertise in North American art, especially Indigenous art, design, and/or visual culture. We welcome candidates with a possible secondary field in the History of Photography or Museum Studies to bolster areas of excellence in the Art History program. We are seeking a candidate who is prepared to teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Art History Program offers BA, MA, and PhD degrees and shares a graduate Museum Studies Certificate Program with the Art and Visual Culture Education Program. In addition, the School of Art houses Studio Art programs in Photography, Video and Imaging, 2D, 3D and Extended Media, and Illustration, Design, and Animation, offering BA, BFA, and MFA degrees. We share close ties with and utilize the resources of the three major museums on campus, the Arizona State Museum, Center for Creative Photography, and University of Arizona Museum of Art, as well as other museums on campus and elsewhere in Tucson.

The teaching load is 2/2. The successful candidate will typically teach at least one undergraduate general education survey course each year, as well as other undergraduate courses, and co-convened undergraduate/graduate lecture courses. Graduate seminars on special topics are also taught on a rotating basis by each faculty member in Art History, and we would expect the successful candidate to teach seminars on special topics related to the candidate’s area of expertise. Candidates will effectively demonstrate an ability to foster and contribute to a culturally responsive and pluralistic learning environment and a sense of belonging for our students through teaching, mentorship, and recruitment.

Faculty in the School of Art are evaluated and promoted based on teaching, research, and service. There is an expectation that faculty at the University of Arizona, a R-1 university, engage in sustained research at the highest level, with peer-reviewed publications throughout one’s career and other contributions to their field. Faculty in Art History actively participate in shared governance activities, with committee assignments at the School of Art, College of Fine Arts, and university-wide level. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Command of appropriate pedagogical skills in support of efficacious teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and scholarship.
  • Demonstrated interest in innovative online teaching.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD or ABD is required. For ABD candidates, a clear path to PhD completion prior to joining the School must be evident.
  • Experience in Art of North America, especially Indigenous Art.
  • Evidence of high impact research agenda.

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • PhD in Art History or closely related field by start of appointment.
  • Teaching experience beyond the TA level.
  • Record of research and publications commensurate with the rank.
