Job Description:
The Pastor Center honors Congressman Ed Pastor and his legacy of service in Arizona and the nation—and serves as an inspiration for the future generation of leaders. Located in the ASU Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, the Center serves as a dynamic, student-centric hub of activity that promotes, publicizes, and encourages political engagement and public service among ASU students and the broader community. The Center serves on the national stage as one of twenty-five university-based public service institutes participating in Harvard University’s National Campaign for Political and Civic Engagement, launched by the Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics.
The mission of the Pastor Center for Politics & Public Service is to prepare students and community members for effective civic and political engagement. We accomplish this mission by (a) developing young leaders for political careers, (b) offering programs and workshops to create an informed electorate, (c) increasing civic participation through annual get-out-the vote campaigns, and (d) providing financial support to create opportunities for emerging leaders to engage in public service and politics.
Our Strategic Objectives serve this mission by focusing on the following priorities:

The Executive Director will provide direct oversight to the daily operations, budget management, and supervision of the staff that oversees the following programs, and is not limited to: Andrew Goodman Foundation Ambassadors, Annual Congressman Ed Pastor Civic Leadership Awards Luncheon & Fundraising Event, Diversifying Political Engagement Panels, Get Out the Vote: Ballot Education and Voter Registration Campaigns, and the Pastor Papers Library Project. Some weekend and evening activities will be required throughout the year to support these efforts, along with serving on approved boards and/or university committees, and with occasional local and national travel to represent the Center at conferences, events, and meetings specific to civic and political engagement.
This is a staff, non-faculty position and reports to the Chief of Public Service of the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions and will collaborate with several other university and community leaders. This role will ensure that the strategic priorities, goals, and objectives of the Center’s programs and initiatives are accomplished.
The Pastor Center is part of the larger Public Service Team at Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions. The Center team participates in and supports the larger Watts College priorities and mission by actively engaging and partnering across the Public Service Team which includes the Pastor Center for Politics and Public Service, Action Nexus on Housing and Homelessness, Design Studio for Community Solutions, the Public Service Academy and the Next Generation Service Corps.
Salary Range:
$103,700-$120,000, DOE
Essential Duties:
Center Leadership
- Provides leadership, oversight, and direction of the day-to-day operations of the Pastor Center for Politics and Public Service for Arizona State University.
- Sets the vision of the Center and facilitates the strategic priorities to meet the goals and objectives.
- Manages the Center program design, implementation, and growth.
- Oversees program accountability, policy, and procedures for students, staff, community partners, and campus stakeholders to the program.
- Directs the Center’s Leadership Council and Advisory Committee to implement the strategic direction and development of long- and short-range goals for programs that have internal and external facing priorities.
- Oversee the Center’s community partnerships; internal and external to ASU, including the awareness, training, and connection to engagement opportunities that benefit students in the Center’s programs.
- In collaboration with the ASU Foundation, implement a strategic fundraising plan to meet program development goals and steward sponsors and key community sponsorships.
- Design innovative and relevant civic, political, and public service programs, initiatives, and events for both students and community participants.
- Grow the Center’s alumni engagement and promote their success.
- Remain current on public service, civic engagement, and leadership development trends.
- Liaise with related faculty and university staff involved in student government and student clubs/organizations.
Budget
- Develops, prepares, and monitors the program budgets including Strategic Initiative Funds (SIF), ASU Foundation Gift accounts, and revenue-generating accounts.
- Attends monthly account reconciliation meetings.
- Trains and manages direct reports of their budget responsibilities to their area of work.
- Places priority of hiring student staff who are Federal Work Study eligible.
- Meets with and reports back to program donors.
- Prepare departmental activity reports including outputs, outcomes, and financial awards.
Supervision
Leads a team of 1 professional Program Manager, 1-3 student staff, and student scholars and leaders.
Runs weekly staff meetings, 1-1 check-ins with professional staff, student staff training, and career edge conversations.
Holds plus/delta reviews of events and special sessions/trainings throughout the academic year.
Provides professional development opportunities for team members while ensuring budget efficiencies.
Track outputs and outcomes ensuring program operations are being implemented at a high standard.
Marketing, Communications, and Reporting
- Oversees content and frequency of Center newsletter, social media posts, annual reports, website updates, and ASU News stories ensuring Center’s branding and connection to the community.
- Updates Case Statements bi-annually with current data, photos, and stories of impact.
- Facilitates monthly ‘thank you’ communication to donors and utilizes Sun Devil Giving Day to recognize Center’s donors at scale.
- Conduct program and event data tracking, collection, and analysis, and contribute to annual reporting that evaluates and accurately tells the story of the Center’s initiatives.
- Works closely with the Watts College media team to organize stories, social posts, and photos of events positioning the Center as a subject matter expert.
University Leadership
- Serves as Center spokesperson to internal and external audiences regarding civic leadership, voter engagement, public service, and leadership development.
- Serves on the Chief of Public Service’s Senior Leadership Team.
- Attends University Management Team Meetings.
- Engages with Watts faculty on the Public Service Advancement Council to connect the Center to projects that align with faculty work and research.
- Serve on or lead hiring committees for strategic positions within the Public Service Team.
- Support and promote the goals of the University and Watts College as an individual and through collaboration with the Public Service Team.
- Travel to all ASU locations as well as off-campus meetings with community partners around the Valley. Occasional travel out of AZ.

Desired Qualifications:
-Experience in department or center operations, budget management, program implementation, and evaluation.
-Experience with designing and implementing civic leadership development and civics education programs, teaching and learning, public service movements, and voter engagement initiatives.
-Experience working effectively with community and public policy leaders from diverse ideological perspectives.
-Experience in higher education instructional and administrative roles.
-Experience in Public Administration and/or Public Policy roles.
-Experience with program resource development and sponsor relations.
-Bilingual in both English and Spanish.
Working Environment:
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Travel to all ASU locations as well as off-campus meetings with community partners around Phoenix, AZ and surrounding Valley. Occasional travel out of AZ may be required. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
