Position Summary

The Department of Theatre, Dance, & Arts Administration in the College of Performing and Visual Arts at Southern Utah University invites applicants with expertise in scenic design & technology for a 9-month, tenure-track, position in theatre at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2025. The successful candidate will join a team of six other design and production faculty and staff in teaching classes for the BFA and BA/BS degree programs. The candidate will offer specific courses in Scenic Design, Scenic Painting, Drawing and Rendering, and Drafting, as well as general design for theatre and dance, and other related areas. This position mentors student scenic designers and artists and also designs and paints scenery for some departmental productions including; plays, musicals and dance concerts for which they receive teaching reassignment. Other duties include student career and academic advising, student recruitment, service to departmental, college, and university committees, and other duties as assigned. Excellence in teaching, creative/scholarly activity, and service is expected. A terminal degree is required for this position. Other qualifications include prior college teaching experience, a record of artistic/scholarly achievement and professional experience in scenic design and scenic art.

First Consideration will begin February 10, 2025, and continue until the position is filled.

Essential Functions


  • Teaching courses in scenic design and art, as well as general design for theatre and dance, drawing and rendering, hand drafting, and other related areas
  • Design scenery for department productions (Typically 1 per semester) Oversee and execute scenic art for all department productions (Typically 2-3 per semester)
  • Artistic/scholarly achievement required
  • Mentor student designers and technicians on department productions
  • Participation in the collaborative process
  • Student career and academic advising
  • Recruitment and retention initiatives of both students and adjunct instructors.
  • Mentor undergraduate students in creative, technical, and research-based design practices.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities. Other duties as assigned


Education & Experience


Minimum Qualifications
  • Terminal degree in a relevant field such as an MFA in Theatre Design or related discipline
  • Professional experience in scenic design and scenic art
  • College teaching experience
  • Prior record of artistic/scholarly achievement

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in theatrical props
  • Experience in scenic technology
