Position Summary
Southern Utah University invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track, benefits-eligible position as Assistant Professor of Filmmaking beginning Fall 2025. Candidates will join a dynamic, cross-disciplinary faculty. This is an interdisciplinary NASAD-approved program with an existing curriculum and new facilities. The start date is August 16, 2025 and the salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The program emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and social responsibility. Faculty members are encouraged to engage in creative/scholarly activities, and contribute to fostering belonging within the department, college, and university.
Course Load: 3/3 per academic year, with internship and film crew supervision, and potential summer teaching opportunities for additional compensation.

Essential Functions
- Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Teach various forms of
cinematography, film production, business of film and its
application, and at least one other area of interest. Assigned
courses are negotiable based on skill set.
- Recruitment and retention initiatives of both students and
adjunct instructors.
- Mentor undergraduate students in creative, technical, and
practices. Participate in departmental, college, and university
service activities.
Education & Experience
Minimum Qualifications
- Proposed Education and Experience Requirements
- Assistant Professor, tenure-track candidates must have a
terminal degree (M.F.A. or Ph.D.) in film or related areas. A
candidate with a non-terminal degree, but with at least 5 years
professional industry experience, may be considered for Assistant
Professor, non-tenure track (NTT).
- Must have professional experience in the practice of filmmaking
with the ability to draw upon expertise in the industry in guiding
student learning. Record of achievement in film festivals and/or
other outlets.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence in higher
education and/or a collaborative environment.
- Ability to incorporate diverse perspectives into teaching and
creative practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Participation in professional filmmaking
associations.
- Technical expertise in software and programming tools used for
multimedia and interactive media applications.
- Demonstrated success in fostering a collaborative learning
environment.
