School of Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning (SGSUP) is an academic unit within the division of Social Sciences in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (The College). SGSUP has a large research portfolio spanning a broad range of sponsors. The College is the largest college at ASU and is organized in a divisional structure comprised of the Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Description:
ASU’s Geospatial Research and Solutions is seeking a highly skilled and motivated GIS Manager to join our team. This role oversees project teams, collaborates with partners to expand geospatial work on and off campus, and advances ASU’s GIS programs. The ideal candidate has proven leadership skills, extensive GIS expertise, and a successful track record of leading GIS teams. Additionally, this candidate should be prepared to pursue municipal and private sector GIS contract work, interacting with both current and future customers to expand the GRS footprint. The successful candidate is responsible for securing and maintaining the necessary GIS infrastructure to support GRS activities. The selected candidate will oversee the administrative and financial aspects of GRS, including developing, implementing, and coordinating programs. The selected candidate will also promote collaboration to meet business requirements and have a strategic vision for enhancing the GIS in the academic and research fields.
Geospatial Research & Solutions (GRS) is a professional services group that works in conjunction with researchers in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) at Arizona State University (ASU). GRS has been providing geospatial support services to clients for over 20 years. Our broadly experienced staff provides support to both academic and non-academic clients, maintaining a strong record of delivering high quality products on time and on budget. The knowledge that our researchers possess incorporates a variety of specializations, and our team has expertise in a wide range of issues including spatial analysis, geographic information science, transportation systems, remote sensing, cyberinfrastructure, economic systems, and urban and regional science.
Essential Duties:
• Oversee the administrative and financial aspects of GRS, including developing, implementing, and coordinating programs.
• Management of geospatial professionals, including participation and assistance with individual performance management.
• Promote collaboration to meet business requirements and have a strategic vision for enhancing the GIS in the academic and research fields.
• Develop new business opportunities for cost-recovery project work in the areas of geospatial data creation, management, analysis, and web application development.
• Support the MASGIS program through academic instruction as well as facilitating student involvement in GRS projects where applicable.
• Support SGSUP and GIS education by advancing student involvement with GRS project activities.
• Deliver well-articulated presentations and prepare comprehensive reports to showcase GIS achievements.
• Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with state, federal, and local government GIS entities.
Desired Qualifications:
• Demonstrated understanding of geospatial data management, analysis, and coordination.
• In-depth knowledge of all aspects of GIS technology and data, including best practices and geospatial technology standards. Must have strong knowledge of the Esri software suite including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
• Solid grasp of geospatial data models, development tools, and techniques.
• Familiarity with geographic projections, datums, and coordinate systems.
• Strong project management skills with a history of meeting deadlines.
• Applied experience in enterprise or multi-agency level GIS management, coordination and policy development.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Master’s of Business Administration, and/or Master’s degree in Geographic Information Science, Spatial Data Management, Computer and Information Sciences.
• Experience demonstrating a progressive history of management and leadership in the areas indicated above.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, adept at consensus building and fostering collaboration.
• Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years related experience; 3 of which include project management
Working Environment:
• Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking.
• Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds.
• Ability to clearly communicate verbally in English, read, write, see and hear to perform essential duties.
• Review of completed tasks; provides and reviews assigned work activities to team members for quality and achievement of set goals.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
