Job Summary

The Department of Psychology and Counseling at The University of Texas at Tyler invites applications for an Assistant or Associate-level Professor of School Counseling to start in Fall 2025. This is a full time, tenure-track position with a nine-month academic year appointment in the school counseling program in the Department of Psychology and Counseling within the College of Education and Psychology at the University of Texas at Tyler.

The School Counseling program at The University of Texas at Tyler is an online, 48-hour Master of Arts degree that is designed to align with the Texas School Counselor standards and the American School Counselor Association guidelines. Students who graduate with a degree from our program meet the coursework requirements for school counselor certification set by the Texas State Board of Educator Certification.

The position is contingent upon funding by the university.

Essential Functions
  • Teaching graduate courses in counseling and school counseling.

  • Supervising school counseling students in their internship and practicum coursework.

  • Pursuing an active scholarly research agenda.

  • Advising school counseling students.

  • The faculty will also have opportunities to work and collaborate with our CACREP-accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling program when desired.


Required Qualifications
  • An earned a doctorate in counselor education or related field (preference given to applicants with a degree earned from a CACREP-accredited program) by August 2025. Department will review and consider candidates who are ABD.

  • Professional experience in school counseling and supervision in school settings.

  • Evidence of university teaching and research activity appropriate for an assistant/associate professor candidate.

  • Active Texas school counselor certification or certification eligible in Texas.


Preferred Qualifications
  • A demonstrated ability to conduct a focused and sustained program of research and scholarship.

  • Experience teaching graduate students in online and/or face-to-face settings.

  • Experience with, or desire to, serve in the role of program coordinator.

  • Experience within Texas schools.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
