University of Virginia
John A. Griffin Dean, McIntire School of Commerce
The University of Virginia (UVA), one of the nation’s leading public institutions, is seeking a highly collaborative, experienced, and visionary leader to serve as the next John A. Griffin Dean of the McIntire School of Commerce (McIntire). Ranked fourth among undergraduate business programs in the United States by Poets&Quants in 2024, McIntire is currently home to 1,000+ in-person degree-seeking students (800 undergraduate students and 252 graduate students), 97 faculty (69 of whom are tenured or tenure track), and 77 staff.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean will provide leadership to propel McIntire forward and continue to enhance its strong national and global reputation. The Dean’s primary objective is to provide foundational and visionary leadership to the School in all aspects of operation, including academic affairs; administration and planning; student recruitment and career placement; alumni relations; enrollment management and financial aid; financial management; and institutional advancement.
The next Dean will join the School during a pivotal and exciting period in its history. Beginning in fall 2025, McIntire’s elite B.S. in Commerce will evolve from a two-year to a three-year program, opening its doors to second-year students. Prompted by shifts in the business landscape, the School’s transition stems from its ongoing commitment to providing an exceptional student experience that positions graduates for personal and professional success. This change not only allows students to access more liberal arts coursework and global experiences, which have long been a hallmark of McIntire’s reputation, it also offers needed safeguards for students navigating competitive recruiting timelines. The curricular expansion is expected to increase McIntire’s undergraduate student population by 50 percent to 1,200 students: The School will continue to enroll 400 students per class, and the instruction will be spread over three years instead of two.
The next Dean will articulate a coherent vision and strategy for McIntire that ties together current initiatives. In addition, they will execute on existing priorities, including the transition of the B.S. in Commerce to a three-year program, the relaunch of the M.S. in Global Commerce, and the scaling up of the new business minor. The next Dean will also recruit and retain talented and diverse faculty and staff and enhance their career development. They will secure additional resources for the School, especially through fundraising, enhance the School’s research enterprise, and promote a culture where all feel empowered and valued. The next Dean will ensure optimal utilization of the newly constructed Shumway Hall and promote more collaboration with other UVA schools, while also engaging with University leaders on pan-University priorities, including artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, real estate initiatives, grand challenges, and global offices.
The John A. Griffin Dean of the McIntire School of Commerce should be a forward-thinking, inspirational leader who actively collaborates with University leadership, faculty, students, and staff. Candidates should be able to clearly articulate a strategic vision and foster broad support for its implementation. Compelling candidates will have an understanding of current and speculative disruption in business education, with a vision for how to position a school of commerce for future success. The Dean will bring a strong commitment to student success, belonging, and well-being and will be highly invested in making McIntire the very best it can be. Fostering a culture of excellence will be critical. The Dean must invest deeply in people and build trust among all stakeholder groups. In keeping with the University’s commitment to Inclusive Excellence, the Dean will foster an environment that supports diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
Candidates from academia are strongly preferred. Such candidates will have relevant administrative leadership and credentials for appointment at the Full Professor level, including a terminal degree and a record of success in teaching and research.
A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), the University of Virginia ranks as one of the leading universities in the nation. In the 20+ years since U.S. News & World Report began ranking public universities as a separate category, UVA has always been in the top five, and it has consistently ranked in the top 30 among the best of all national universities, public and private.
