About the Opportunity
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Assistant/Director of Housing and Residential Life, the Area Coordinator (AC) position is a 12-month full-time live-in staff member critical to the development, management, and oversight of assigned residential communities/areas including supervision of Resident Assistants, full-time Community Assistant, supporting Living Learning communities and other programs, serving on departmental committees, and the creation of a residential community conducive to the social and intellectual growth of our students. ACs are responsible for creating a climate that supports student success, personal development, and high levels of resident engagement. ACs will also support summer assignments related to conferences and events, summer session housing, and new student orientation. Due to the nature of the position, ACs are expected to work outside of traditional business hours including participation in an on-call duty rotation. Responsibilities often extend into weekend and evening/early morning hours.
Responsibilities Include:
Staff Supervision & Development
- Supervise a team of Resident Assistants and Community
Assistants to include the planning, training, and development of
the staff.
- Create and manage full-time staff hours and
schedules
- Participate in the planning, selection, and implementation of
all Residential Life staff.
- Adhere to the expectations and responsibilities of the
role.
- Manage Community Assistants weekly schedules and Workday
input
Community Development
- Support staff in coordinating the community development &
programmatic efforts for the Living Learning
Communities.
- Approach and maintain a positive attitude and environment to
the role to maximize community building.
- Manage LLC programming initiatives such as excursions,
community events, and first year transitional
experiences.
- Actively foster an environment that is safe and supportive,
including high visibility and interaction with
residents.
- Facilitate mediation between students experiencing
conflicts.
- Assist with the opening and closing of the residential
facilities each semester and at all vacation/break
periods.
On-Call Rotation
- Participate in rotating on-call (emergency response) coverage
for the campus, including holidays, evenings, and
weekends.
- Assist, respond and document personal, facilities and medical
emergencies.
- Work in conjunction with the Residential Security Office,
Department of Public Safety, and the Global Safety Office staff
regarding safety issues and resident emergencies.
Administration of Conduct
- Serve as first level student conduct judicial administrator;
communicate policy information and expectations regarding
appropriate behavior to residents.
- Administer sanctions, when necessary, that are educational and
support the student's development while holding them accountable to
the Student Code of Conduct and residential policies.
- Facilitate educational sanctions and opportunities to create a
culture of accountability
Administrative Functions
- Oversee the daily operation of residential communities,
including, check-in and checkout procedures, facility, and security
management.
- Serve, support and promote the Division of Student Life and
other campus wide initiatives as an Oakland representative,
including serving on committees and presenting on
university/department/network wide events.
- Work closely with Housing, Housekeeping, Facilities management,
and support staff to fulfill department objectives.
- Support housing operations as needed to meet departmental
needs.
- Maintain programming budgets and track staff's programming
requirements to assess the effectiveness of community building
efforts.
- Professionally participate in student events on campus during
and outside of business hours.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and related Residential Life experience
required, Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Ed
Administration or related field preferred.
- Minimum two years with relevant experience around community
development or student leadership/involvement and one-year live-in
staff experience in residence life preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in student conduct/judicial
affairs.
- Interpersonal/human relations skills

- Ability to maintain confidential information
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to work flexible schedule with on-call duty
rotation
- Ability to operate a personal computer and various software
programs
- Ability to enforce safety policies, practices, procedures and
requirements of the department and university.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies
across campus
- Ability to think critically and work under pressure while
handling student and/or staff crisis situations
- Ability to respond to the problems and challenges of the
diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
of college students
- Ability to serve as a representative of Housing &
Residential Life & Northeastern University - Oakland
Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands:
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make
professional presentations.
- Speak and listen to others, both in person, by email, and over
the telephone.
- Ability to move from building to building on campus which
requires walking up and down hills and stairs.
- May occasionally drive a college golf cart and drive off campus
for work related business.
- Office environment, subject to interruptions.
- May require long days, evenings and weekend work.
The hiring salary for this position is $70,210.20.
