Public Services Archivist: The Monsignor William Noe Field Archives and Special Collections at Seton Hall University invites applications for a full-time, potentially renewable Term Library faculty position. We seek a collaborative and service-oriented archivist who can provide research services and lead public programming for Seton Hall's rare book and manuscript collections and ensure accuracy and quality of collection description in public-facing portals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The successful candidate will bear primary responsibility for
providing accurate and complete collections data to the public,
responding to remote and in person research inquiries in a
deadline-driven environment
- Drive research services through collections data portals,
spearhead efforts to enrich the user experience of these portals
and collaborate to improve the quality and quantity of collections
metadata.
- Manage the reading room, which is open by appointment, in
collaboration with archives staff and with the support of the
Special Collections Assistant
- Conduct strategic outreach to strengthen the archives'
relationships with students and faculty across campus as well as
the Archdiocese of Newark
- Collaborate with other library faculty to identify ways to
utilize special collections materials to support their work with
the academic departments
- Re-envision the role of archives instruction, finding new and
creative ways to support faculty across campus with
collections-oriented programming
- Support existing special collections programming and identify
opportunities to expand and diversify archival offerings (talks,
workshops and lectures)
- Provide input on research activity to help prioritize
processing work
- Assist with processing archival collections on a targeted
basis
- Work collaboratively with Gallery staff and Archdiocesan
Archivist
- Supervise student workers, interns, and volunteers, instructing
and guiding them on reading room procedures and best practices for
handling materials
- Complete special projects as assigned (examples include grant
writing, assisting with Vault maintenance and special shifting
projects, rare book evaluations, rehousing, etc.)
- Annually report on Archives services and activities.
Required Qualifications:
- MLS or MLIS with concentration in Archives
- Knowledge of archival principles and practices, including
descriptive standards such as DACS, reparative description,
familiarity with metadata standards for born-digital, AV, and
museum objects.
- Familiarity with processing standards and practices such as
MPLP and post-custodial models of stewardship sufficient to
interpret these to the general public.
- Experience with archival management software such as
Archivesspace, including back-end development and batch
processing.
- Minimum of two years' experience providing reference or
research services for special collections materials in an academic
research library or similar setting.
- Ability to work with a diverse range of students, scholars, and
independent researchers
- Experience with instruction and public speaking.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain productive
working relationships with colleagues and students.
- Demonstrated interest in continued professional growth,
maintaining knowledge or skills through involvement in professional
organizations or continued education.
- Excellent interpersonal, organization, and communication
skills.
- Ability to support the Catholic mission of the
University.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and
inclusion.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in museums, familiarity with museum practices and
terminology
- Experience providing access to born-digital
collections
- Understanding of and experience in graphic design, web design,
and video editing
- Database development including coding queries and managing
migrations
