Job Description:
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, term (clinical-track) faculty position to support the clinical education of professional students in veterinary medicine and surgery. The qualifications, documented experience, and interests of the selected candidate will determine appointment rank.
The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to teach throughout all four years of the veterinary curriculum as a member of the Surgery, Anesthesia, and Community Outreach team. Primary efforts in this position will focus on didactic and laboratory surgical teaching, course organization, and outcomes assessment. This position will also support clinical skill development in Anesthesia, Community Outreach/Primary Care and the formal Clinical Skills laboratory. Some educational responsibilities occur after standard business hours and on weekends resulting in shared after-hours obligations. The remaining efforts will be in collaborative clinical and educational research activities and institutional service. The percentage effort associated with each professional obligation will be determined by mutual agreement between the candidate and the Department Chair of VCS.
We are seeking an individual with a collegial, collaborative philosophy and dedication to participate in all levels of student and technician education. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, innovative, adaptable, team-orientated, and possess excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Optimal professional skills and knowledge for the position would include:
- Experience teaching of basic skills in veterinary surgery
including pre-operative evaluation, surgical technique, and
post-operative care
- Operational knowledge of current AAHA Anesthesia
Guidelines
- Experience with small animal primary patient care and
effectively managing medical or surgical complications in clinical
patients
- Documented excellence in compassionate patient care
- Collegial interactions with colleagues and team
members
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- DVM or equivalent degree.
- A minimum of 5 years clinical practice experience in a private
or academic setting.
- State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before the first day of
employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated clinical skills in surgery, dentistry, anesthesia,
primary patient care, and pain management
- Board certification or eligibility in either an American
Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) or European Board of
Veterinary Specialization (EBVS) acknowledged clinical
specialty
- Advanced certifications within an allied field of Veterinary
Medicine. Examples include: Fear Free Certification, Certified
Veterinary Pain Practitioner, etc.
- Evidence of successful and effective didactic and/or clinical
teaching
- Clinical experiences in general practice and primary patient
care
- An advanced degree (MS, PhD, or equivalent degree)

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences provides significant clinical educational training for professional students. The Surgery, Anesthesia, and Community Outreach team focuses on producing "practice ready" graduates with competent veterinary skills. The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states.
