Position Summary

Dallas College seeks a dynamic, visionary leader to play an important role in the design, development, and launch of the seven new Dallas College academic schools (the Schools). The Lab Manager will serve within one of the Dallas College academic Schools. Dallas College is establishing the Schools with a new, ambitious academic framework to ensure the Schools align with the North Texas region’s workforce and industry needs to ensure graduates’ success in their careers.

The Lab Manager will report to the Dean of Academic Affairs or the Vice Provost. The Lab Manager is responsible for overseeing the operation of one or more laboratories through collaboration with faculty and staff.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Understanding of laboratory operations, laboratory information systems (software and hardware), and laboratory equipment in one or more discipline areas within the School.

  • Able to instruct credit classes in one or more discipline areas within the School for which they are credentialed to teach.

  • Strong collaborator who can work with a cross-functional team to accomplish goals.

  • Ability to think strategically and innovatively creating realistic plans and workflows.

  • Must be able to manage multiple projects and possess strong analytical skills and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrates high a high degree of proficiency in performing job assignments within allotted times.

  • Able to identify problems, involve others in seeking solutions, conducts appropriate analyses, searches for best solutions and responds quickly to new challenges.

  • Advanced ability to use computer technology to access data, maintain records, generate reports and communicate with others.

  • Must be able to comply with Dallas College policies/procedures as well as applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations.



Key Responsibilities
  • Manages several laboratory areas including supervision of Laboratory Specialists or other staff.

  • Ensure compliance to laboratory safety rules and regulations, including health and safety policies, and college, state and federal policies.

  • Assists with the testing and evaluation of new technologies.

  • Recommends the purchase of equipment and information systems (software and hardware).

  • Develops methods to organize workflow to ensure quality, precision and timeliness of outputs.

  • Develops comprehensive inventory system for efficient tracking of equipment, tools and supplies for one or more laboratories.

  • Responsible for reports, proposals and recommendations related to lab functions.

  • Recognizes opportunities to apply quality improvement principles in daily activities.

  • Researches, evaluates and recommends new lab equipment, systems, and materials.

  • Develop strategic plan for laboratory services to support existing and new programs.

  • Prepares budget requests and manages approved budget.

  • Manages the preparation and maintenance of reports necessary to carry out the functions of laboratory support.

  • Collects and maintains data needed to evaluate service usage and customer satisfaction.

  • Prepares periodic reports, as necessary or requested, to track strategic goal accomplishment.

  • Build, maintain and encourage productive working relationships with faculty and ensure that laboratory support is coordinated to meet instructional and other needs.

  • Keeps up to date on the professional and technical aspects on the job.

  • Utilizes excellent interpersonal, listening, oral and written communication skills in order to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and constituents in the Dallas College community network.

  • Provide excellent customer service.

  • Completes required Dallas College Professional Development training hours per academic year.

  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Lab Managers must be eligible to teach in one or more of the programs in which they serve.

  • Non-transferrable Programs: Bachelor’s degree in related field plus three (3) years of related work experience including one (1) year of demonstrated teaching experience and one (1) year of supervisory or team lead experience, or Associates degree in related field plus three (3) years of related work experience including one (1) year of demonstrated teaching experience and one (1) year of supervisory or team lead experience.

  • Applicable degree above is dependent upon teaching discipline and will be designated at time of job posting.

  • Transferrable Programs:

  • Master’s degree in related field or Master’s degree with 18 hours in teaching discipline; three (3) years of related work experience including one (1) year of demonstrated teaching experience and one (1) year of supervisory or team lead experience.

  • Official transcripts are required.

  • Some positions may require specific state licensed/certifications depending on the discipline.

  • Bilingual or multilingual preferred.
