The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at South Dakota State University invites applications for a 9-month, full-time, benefit eligible, tenure-track faculty. This position is at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering. The appointment begins in August of 2025. This position is supervised by the Department Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Applications are invited in any area of Structural Engineering. Individuals with expertise in the areas of engineering for extreme loading conditions, experimental research, reliability and risk assessment, computational mechanics, structural health monitoring, and innovative materials are especially encouraged to apply.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is currently enjoying new and renovated facilities, growth in graduate education and research, and strong ties to its regional constituents. The department grants B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering. The undergraduate program is ABET accredited. Some of the important attributes of the department are:
  • Faculty and staff who are deeply committed to the success of students and the department, and are strongly engaged with local/regional employers;
  • Member of CTIPS, a U.S. DOT sponsored university transportation center
  • Recent departmental space remodeling providing high quality classrooms, offices and laboratories including the following teaching and research labs: Lohr Structures Laboratory, HDR Environmental Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, Transportation Engineering Laboratory, Asphalt and Binder Laboratory, Geotechnical Laboratory, and Materials Laboratory;
  • Strong growth in funded research and the graduate program;
  • Faculty and students who are strongly engaged in community service;
  • An award-winning ASCE student chapter; and
  • Opportunities for innovative interdisciplinary research within SDSU as well as with researchers at other regional engineering colleges.

RESPONSIBILITIES :
The successful candidate will be expected to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, advise undergraduate and graduate students, guide student research, develop an externally funded research program in the applicant’s area of expertise, and be committed to professional activities by participating in both internal and external outreach and service. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to grow and enhance the testing infrastructure of an existing high-bay structural laboratory.

SALARY :
The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications, starting at $92,000 for Assistant Professor rank. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or closely related field with emphasis on Structural Engineering received by start date.
  • Have at least one earned degree at any level in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program or provide evidence of teaching coursework at an ABET accredited program.
  • Ability or potential to establish an externally funded research program in one of the following areas of structural engineering: design for extreme loading conditions, experimental research, reliability and risk assessment, computational mechanics, structural health monitoring, and innovative materials.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Licensed or ability to become licensed as a professional engineer.
  • Knowledge of the practice of civil engineering.
