Duties & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
The Division of Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success is actively seeking 2 new Richmond Talent Pathways Coaches. Working under the Congressionally Directed Community Project Funds (CDCPF), as part of the Richmond Talent Pathway program, the pathway coach provides a broad range of intentional student and academic support services designed to recruit, support, train, and retain diverse student populations in high need career fields to include science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), healthcare, education, and public service in Central Virginia. The coaches will provide wraparound services, connect students in grades 9-12 with real-world experiences, and prepare them for college.
The ideal candidate will have experience supporting under-represented students in a K-12 setting and a passion for student success.
Core Responsibilities:
Student Recruitment and Coaching (50%): Provide academic support, career exploration, social and personal well-being coaching, and financial coaching to program participants.
- Consult and collaborate with RPS faculty and staff regarding program planning and implementation and develop partnerships to better serve program participants and their families.
- Collaborate with SEMS Communications and RPS to distribute
communications to prospective and accepted program
participants.
- Collaborate with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and SEMSS Communications to distribute communications to accepted, and admitted students who will be attending VCU.
- Utilize a proactive academic coaching method to meet with
participants three times or more per semester to encourage student
success and increase student retention and graduation
rates.
- Serve as a mentor to program participants to assist them with
career-based planning and development, to offer health and
well-being services and resources, and to provide financial
literacy and planning resources.
- Serve as a success coach for program participants who attend
VCU.
- Serve as a liaison to campus resources for all program
participants.
- Promote program benefits and opportunities to potential
students and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with RPS and university stakeholders in developing,
coordinating, and supervising workshops and programs to provide
services to program participants.
- Encourage the continued development of social and personal life
skills through traditional and non-traditional
programming.
- Work with peer mentors in support of the
participants.
- Support various administrative functions related to the program
including maintaining and analyzing student data.
- Coordinate a variety of departmental activities, requisition
relevant resources, plan and implement special projects.
- In preparation for the Summer Scholars program, assist the
program director with the marketing, recruitment, communications,
program planning, and onboarding of prospective, accepted, and
admitted cohort students.
- During the Summer Scholars program, design and implement programs to support students’ sense of belonging, to improve their understanding of college terminology and processes, and to instill the expectation that the cohort will remain engaged beyond the summer program.
- During the Summer Scholars program and other activities, meet with cohort participants individually and in small and large groups to provide support and build community.
- Participate in state, regional, and national professional
development opportunities.
- Remain informed of research and best practices associated with
student success in underserved student populations.
- Additional tasks identified by the program director.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in student personnel services, education, counseling or a related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent training or experience.
- Knowledge of assessment and data collection, learning styles, and learning assistance strategies, and experience in utilizing a coaching approach to student assistance.
- Ability to effectively maintain a caseload of participants and provide them with documented coaching services and activities.
- Knowledge of barriers to postsecondary education faced by underserved college students.
- Proficient computer skills (Excel spreadsheet, Outlook, Data entry technology, PowerPoint, Word, Internet, and search engines).
- Demonstrated organization, interpersonal, customer service, and time management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to advocate on the student’s behalf with faculty, staff, and parents.
- Ability to foster leadership, study skills, team building exercises, and confidence building.
- Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so.
- Experience in providing case management services and advising students on college course selection, financial aid application process, and graduate school exploration and funding.
- Experience with student information systems.
- Experience with providing support for or leading an undergraduate summer bridge or related program.
- Experience working with a program or initiative for underserved and at-risk college students.
- Bilingual ability, specifically Spanish.
This is a grant-funded restricted position. Continued employment is dependent upon continued funding.
