Description

This position exists primarily to advise and consult with prospective, new, continuing and transfer undergraduate and graduate students, parents and other individuals who contact the office in person, by telephone or by email with questions regarding any aspect of the University's financial aid programs, policies and procedures. This position is also responsible for verifying the federal financial aid application data for selected FAFSA applicants and for exercising independent professional judgment regarding needed adjustments to a student's financial aid eligibility.

Examples of Duties

  • Provides advice, counseling, clarification and technical assistance to students and their parents regarding Federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs, policies and procedures. This involves handling an appointment load (and seeing walk-in customers) 15-20 hours per week.

  • Calculates applicant eligibility for federal and state financial aid programs, performs technical data analysis and verification and exercises independent professional decision-making in the initial awarding of aid, award.
    adjustments and appropriate changes in application data within specified time frame.

  • Troubleshoots, evaluates and independently corrects errors and discrepancies in financial aid applicant data.

  • Responds to federal and state financial aid questions from faculty members, administrators and support staff, as well as high school guidance counselors and other external ‘customers’ of the university within one business day during non-peak processing times and 2 business days during peak processing time.

  • Travels to area high schools and community organizations to independently conduct daytime and evening financial aid workshops for high school seniors and their parents, and other groups.

  • Coordinates tasks for the following programs: work study, study abroad, Teach Grant, and short term loans, and academic works.

  • Stays current on federal and state financial aid regulations and guidelines through training workshops, professional meetings and reading the professional literature. Participates in state, regional and national professional financial aid association meetings and seminars.

  • Makes independent decisions regarding the financial aid eligibility of students who do not meet the standards of satisfactory academic progress or who have special/extraordinary financial, family or personal circumstances.

  • Supports the university’s student recruitment and retention efforts by participating in orientation events, campus visit days, and other activities sponsored by the Office of Admissions and other UCM departments.
Typical Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in any field required.
Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of employment experience in an Accounting/Finance/or Banking field required.
  • Work experience in an academic/support office in higher education/public school with customer service experience preferred.
  • Work experience in a college or university financial aid office preferred.
