Position Summary
The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Stockroom. The position supports instructional and research laboratories within the department. An important requirement is the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.

Required Qualifications
- B.S. or B.A. degree in chemistry, biochemistry or closely related field.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
- Experience with chemical inventory management.
- Experience managing budgets.
- Knowledge of safe chemical practices.
- Ability to maintain common laboratory equipment.
- Experience working in an academic laboratory setting.
- Transporting laboratory supplies which may include items exceeding 40 pounds.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UW-La Crosse is dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and outreach education in a welcoming and inclusive environment. We aim to instill in our graduates the skills and drive necessary to meet the challenges that humanity faces in the 21st century. With over 30 tenure-track faculty and staff members, we actively provide our students with the solid foundation in chemistry and biochemistry required for successful careers in industry, research, education, engineering, health professions, and other interdisciplinary fields, while offering support to the other departments in our college. Our internationally recognized research-active faculty members engage our students in cutting-edge chemical, biochemical, and educational research in an environmentally and ethically sound manner that also provides the practical skills to the students we mentor. Our department and college maintain a large array of modern instrumentation and research/teaching laboratories in a new state-of-the-art Prairie Springs Science Center. Department members also provide a range of professional services to our community, professions, and institution in ways commensurate with our expertise and talent.

Responsibility Statement
Inventory Management, Purchasing, and Supply Distribution
Duties to Support Responsibility
- Maintain accurate records of chemicals using a chemical inventory management system.
- Maintain accurate records of non-chemical lab supplies available in the department stockroom and other storage areas.
- Perform routine inventory checks of chemicals and lab supplies.
- Purchase chemicals and non-chemical lab supplies for the department; assist staff with selection of appropriate chemicals and supplies.
- Coordinate distribution of chemicals and laboratory supplies to staff.
- Coordinate maintenance and repairs of laboratory equipment, as requested by the department chair.
Support of Instructional Lab Spaces
Duties to Support Responsibility
- Support the preparation of instructional lab spaces as directed by the chair.
Supervision and Training
Duties to Support Responsibility
- Supervise staff of student workers in the stockroom.
- Maintain training system to ensure safe lab practices for student workers in the stockroom.
Budget Management

- Maintain updated lists of laboratory expenditures associated with the primary department account, and other accounts as requested by the department chair.
- Prepare budget reports as requested by the department chair.
Laboratory Safety and Waste Management

- Ensure chemicals and materials are stored according to safety regulations.
- Work collaboratively with the Environmental Health and Safety officer to ensure appropriate collection and disposal of chemical waste generated by the department.
- Maintain emergency response plan including protocols for chemical spills, fires, and other incidents.
- Ensure emergency equipment, such as spill kits and fire extinguishers, is readily available and functional.
- Serve as a member of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department Safety Committee.
