The Range Safety Officer’s primary duty is to ensure the safety of range users and the protection of LMGC property. RSOs are responsible to assist in the training and instruction of proper firearm use and development for the appreciation of recreational shooting sports.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for the safety of all students, faculty, staff and visitors on a Liberty Mountain Gun Club (LMGC) range.
  • Responsible to facilitate a safe environment for academic instruction in the safe use of firearms.
  • Complete day to day operational tasks to ensure seamless function of LMGC facilities including maintaining machine operations, grounds keeping, and monitoring facility cleanliness to ensure smooth operation of range.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of all range firearms.
  • Assist with the documentation, tracking and reporting on shooting supply inventory, assets, and work order status to chart progress toward departmental objectives.
  • Assist in the oversight and facilitation of LMGC safety courses/classes.
  • Frequently oversee and assist with events or operations during evening, nights, or weekend hours.
  • Remain up to date on industry standards and ensure that the facilitation of personal and group instruction remains effective and current.
  • Perform all other tasks assigned by the Assistant Director of Operations and Safety to aid and assist in the operation of Campus Recreation Facilities.
  • Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Limited supervisory responsibilities are required for this position. At times the occupant of this position may be asked to lead small work groups on tasks with student workers or part time staff.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain within six months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain NRA Range Safety Officer certification within six months of employment.
  • Ability to interact with patrons and visitors with a calm demeanor at all times.
  • Must be highly alert and willing to put the safety of clientele as a high priority.
  • Must have the ability to be firm when delivering safety cautions, but friendly and encouraging while offering advice.
  • Familiarity with the various types of firearms used in recreational shooting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • General shooting range experience.
  • Current NRA Range Safety Officer Certification
  • Shooting related certifications (ie. Instructor, coach, armorer)
  • Competitive or extensive recreational shooting background

  • Ability to effectively communicate to convey clear, well-articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
Physical and Sensory Abilities
  • Familiarity with different shooting disciplines and the firearms associated with those disciplines.
  • Must be able to recognize and enforce all safety rules and regulations.
  • Occasionally required to travel to local and campus locations.
  • Frequently required to move around and stand for extended periods to perform labor tasks and other duties.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 50 or more pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is primarily outdoors in various weather conditions. Both areas are well lit and the noise level is considerable. Eye and ear protection will be required at all times while working on the range.

Driving Requirements

Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required to travel around the facility in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
