Thomas Nelson Community College (Thomas Nelson) is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the heart of Hampton Roads, a region renowned for being the birthplace of America and home to communities rich in culture and industry. Bordering the Chesapeake Bay, the region boasts beaches, major attractions, world-class museums, and a vibrant visual and performing arts scene. The area is known for its economic vitality, which includes being home to several military bases, ship building facilities, the NASA Langley Research Center and Jefferson Lab, major colleges and universities, and varied commercial industries and enterprises.

Thomas Nelson is a comprehensive community college, offering a variety of programs of study leading to an associate’s degree, certificate, or career studies certificate. In addition to the many popular transfer degree programs, the college is known for its strong technical and pre-professional programs and its outreach to the community as a partner and leader in workforce development. The college also provides underprepared students with developmental studies to help them to be successful in college-level coursework.

Founded in 1967, Thomas Nelson serves over 16,000 students each year in credit instruction and over 10,000 in non-credit instruction and workforce services. The College is served by over 110 fulltime faculty, 500 adjunct faculty, and 319 staff members. Faculty and staff are strategic and responsive, committed to understanding and meeting the needs of the region.

The college has two campuses, one in Hampton and the Historic Triangle Campus located in Williamsburg. The college also has a satellite site at the Southeast Higher Education Center in Newport News. The communities primarily served by the college are the Cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the Counties of James City and York.

The Position:

The Dean of Science, Engineering and Technology reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for an academic division of instructional programs and courses that support the first two years of baccalaureate education and prepare students to directly enter the workforce. Credit degree programs include Science (biology, chemistry, geology, physics),

Engineering, Engineering Technology (advanced integrated manufacturing, mechanical, electronics, electrical, industrial), Computer-aided Drafting and Design, Automotive Technology, and HVAC-R. As part of an academic management team pursuing excellence through collaboration and creation of a learner-centered environment, the Dean plays a key role in recruitment, professional development, evaluation, and promotion of faculty. The Dean promotes and ensures quality, integrity, currency, and responsiveness of all instructional activities and articulates a vision for the division that advances the College’s mission and contributes to achievement of the College’s goals and objectives for student success. Through the development of creative and innovative partnerships with business, industry and four-year institutions, and through grants and contractual opportunities, the Dean represents the College in community outreach and identifies and manages division resources to support a robust curriculum.

Major responsibilities include:

• Conducting systematic curriculum development and review, ensuring continued excellence in signature programs, creating programs in new and emerging fields, and recommending discontinuance of programs and courses that are no longer viable
• In conjunction with faculty and administrative staff, developing a schedule of classes that provides students with a roadmap for timely program completion and meets the needs of students and community stakeholders both on and off campus
• Promoting and ensuring quality, accuracy, and responsiveness of faculty advising for students enrolled in programs housed in the division, including career and academic advising
• Working with the faculty, other academic administrators, counselors and staff to remove obstacles and assist students with navigating the college’s programs, administrative procedures, and support services
• Responding promptly to inquiries and concerns from students, faculty and staff and resolving complaints based on applicable policies and procedures
• Providing oversight for implementing applicable recruitment, professional development, and performance evaluation policies and procedures to ensure currency of knowledge and skills of an excellent and diverse faculty
• Promoting innovation and effective use of new technologies and pedagogies in on- site instruction and delivery of distance learning courses
• Ensuring that laboratories, facilities and equipment managed by the division support excellence in teaching and learning
• Ensuring compliance with requirements and standards for regional and specialized or programmatic accreditation with special attention to student learning outcomes
• Providing leadership for special programs and initiatives, to include dual enrollment, early college, and college readiness in conjunction with regional high schools; honors; student cohorts and project-based learning
• Working with four-year colleges and universities to develop and maintain innovative partnerships that provide effective pathways for efficient transfer into baccalaureate degree programs
• Working with Workforce Development and business and industry to develop and maintain a strong network of partners to provide internship, cooperative education and apprenticeship-related opportunities for students
• Producing academic and other reports and studies required by external agencies or for internal decision-making and improvement
• Developing and monitoring the division budget, including identifying, securing, and managing grant funds to ensure effective and efficient use of the division’s resources

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

• A Master’s Degree with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in a division- related field (science, engineering, engineering technologies) from a regionally accredited college or university
• Substantial full-time undergraduate, college teaching experience
• Evidence of leadership accomplishments in a collegial environment
• Full-time industry experience in a division-related field
• Commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement in support of the mission of the comprehensive community college
• Demonstrated innovative strategies that support teaching and learning
• Evidence of collaborative ability with internal and external college stakeholders
• Ability to establish a culture of inclusivity
• Experience working with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications:

• Doctorate, from a regionally accredited college or university
• Substantial full-time community college teaching experience, in a science, engineering, or engineering technology field

Salary Range: $64,660-$103,000 Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
