Geneva College invites applications for Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. The position begins August 2025 and will remain open, until filled.

Summary of Responsibilities: Geneva College is a Christian liberal arts college with majors in Chemistry and Biochemistry and an ABET-accredited engineering program with a chemical engineering concentration. The Chemistry program has been ACS-approved since 1958. The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor, but a higher rank may be considered based upon qualifications and experience. The area of expertise is flexible but should include analytical or physical chemistry competence. Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach general chemistry and general science courses is required.

This position is encouraged and expected to develop a program of projects and research for undergraduate students, serve students through academic advising, serve the College through committee participation, and support the College's mission of integrating a Christian worldview within their discipline.

 

Essential Responsibilities: (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.)

  1. Teach twelve contact hours per semester.
  2. Adequately prepare all course materials and lessons (Note: preparation time will vary based on instructor experience in teaching that course).
  3. Provide each student with clear course expectations, evaluations, and timelines through carefully written topical outlines and approved syllabus per faculty established guidelines.
  4. Provide interesting and relevant assignments for students that demonstrate learning outcomes in a real-life setting.
  5. Suitably challenge, engage, support, and communicate with students to encourage their participation and learning while maintaining mutual value and respect.
  6. Provide timely grades to students through college software and upload mid-term and final grades by college deadlines.
  7. Respond to student questions on a timely basis.
  8. Ensure course and program learning outcomes are delivered as defined by the syllabus.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Teach Analytical or Physical Chemistry lecture and lab.
  2. Teach other upper and lower-level courses in Chemistry in accord with areas of expertise and departmental needs.
  3. Teach Introduction to Natural Science (a core class for non-majors) in annual rotation with other faculty.
  4. Develop research or senior design projects suitable for Chemistry or Chemical Engineering students.
  5. Advise students in the Chemistry program.
  6. Participate in departmental meetings and other interactions for program improvement and curriculum planning.
  7. Contribute to the maintenance, upkeep and student training of laboratory instruments in the Chemistry program.

Job Requirements - Administrative:

  2. Physical: Must be able to perform the following: talking, hearing, and seeing. Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all office equipment including, but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and telephones.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum:
    1. Education/Certification: A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related discipline (such as chemical engineering or material science) is required. However, we would consider an M.S. degree (from an accredited U.S. college/university or international equivalent in Chemistry or a chemically related field) if it is accompanied by outstanding expertise and educational experience.
    2. Experience: Candidate must have some level of experience in college teaching.
    3. Skill/Abilities: knowledge of chemistry with preference for physical/analytical chemistry.
    4. Christian Commitment: An eligible candidate must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to the candidate who supports and has an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. An eligible candidate must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
  2. Preferred:
    1. Education/Certification: Preference to candidates with earned Ph.D. from an accredited U.S. university or international equivalent in Chemistry or a chemically related field.
    2. Experience: 3 or more years previous higher education teaching experience preferred.
    3. Skill/Abilities: in-depth knowledge of chemistry with preference for physical/analytical chemistry; demonstrated ability in teaching; experience in developing projects or research for undergraduates in chemically related areas; experience with use of modern chemical instrumentation.
