Job Summary
Reporting to the executive director of Marketing and Communications, the Communications Director will serve as an integral part of the Tepper Schools marketing and communications team. The primary role of the position is to plan, implement and evaluate international, national and regional publicity campaigns utilizing print, broadcast and digital media outlets.
The candidate will regularly interact with Tepper School faculty, staff, students, and expert spokespersons to draft key messages, press releases, news stories for school news channels, pitching and messaging documents, multimedia (video/podcasts), social media/blog posts, and materials designed to publicize the school as well as its academic programs, research, events, and other newsworthy items that advance the schools reputation, programs and mission.
The director will also serve as the point of contact for media inquiries and will drive relationship-building activities with journalists. The candidate will also assist with news tracking, reporting, and participate in regular editorial planning meetings with the marketing and communications team as well as Tepper School and Carnegie Mellon colleagues.
The successful candidate must obtain all background clearances as may be required by Pennsylvania Act 153.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelors Degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or equivalent combination of training and experience required.
Experience:
- 7 to 10 years of experience in media relations activities including direct (regular) contact with journalists, preparing spokespersons for interviews, administration of press events, and authoring key messages and strategic planning documents for targeted external communication channels. Experience working with national/international media outlets as well as crisis communications is a requirement.
Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communications skills required. Professionalism and the ability to research complex issues and author messages suitable for varied audiences. Exceptionally strong interpersonal skills aimed at effectively working with both internal stakeholders and external audiences Effective communication with reporters and the Tepper School faculty, not only demonstrating strong verbal/written skills, but also demonstrating an aptitude for understanding and effectively communicating the substance of complex, esoteric topics.
