Associate Vice President for Human Resources
Lafayette College, a private, nonprofit, higher education institution, is accepting applications and nominations for the position of Associate Vice President for Human Resources. Located in Easton, Pennsylvania, the campus is approximately 70 miles west of New York City, 60 miles north of Philadelphia, and 35 miles south of the Poconos. The Office of Human Resources serves the Lafayette College community, which consists of approximately 800 employees, in the areas of employment, compensation, training, employee benefits, and labor relations. Our vision is to help advance the mission of Lafayette College and provide the highest level of support to our colleagues.
Lafayette College seeks an innovative and seasoned professional to fill the position of Associate Vice President. Reporting to the Vice President for Human Resources, the AVP will provide leadership in strategic planning and implementation of all aspects of the human resources functions. The successful candidate will have the demonstrated ability to create a collaborative environment that reflects operational effectiveness, superior customer service, and cultural alignment with institutional priorities. The AVP will oversee staff recruitment and retention, HR policies and procedures, compensation, employee relations, training and professional development, and benefits planning and administration. The AVP will oversee Director of HR/Employment, Director of HR/Benefits, HRIS Administrator, and HR staff, and will work in close cooperation with the General Counsel regarding compliance requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops and implements strategic goals for the Human Resources Department, and provides leadership for policy and program development. Ensures adherence to best practices, effective collaboration, and implementation of innovative solutions that help advance the strategic goals of the Department and the College.
- Directs the overall administration, coordination, and assessment of the Human Resources function including recruitment, retention, labor relations, training, employee data management, compensation, and benefits.
- Provides support in recruiting, screening, and hiring the best qualified faculty, management personnel, and staff. Identifies and implements strategies to recruit and retain a diverse workforce.
- Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, and the community in a diverse, multicultural environment.
- Updates and streamlines HR systems and processes, and benchmarks HR related data.
- Provides advice and assistance regarding evaluation of employee performance and employee relations issues.
- Analyzes workforce classification and compensation, assesses the competitiveness of compensation practices, and makes recommendations to align classifications and salaries with system-wide benchmarks and market data.
- Ensures that programs are provided to meet the profession development needs of faculty and staff.
- Oversees administration of benefits including health and welfare plans, retirement benefits, disability, and workers’ compensation.
- Oversees development and administration of employment related policies including leaves of absence and workplace wellness initiatives.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field is required with a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible human resources leadership and administrative experience, preferably in higher education. The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of best practices in higher education human resource management. A master’s degree in Human Resource Management or related field is preferred.
Other qualifications include:
- Professional experience in multiple areas of human resource functions including recruitment, classification, compensation, benefits, employee relations, professional development, and training.
- Ability to create a collaborative environment that values operational effectiveness, superior customer service, and cultural alignment with institutional priorities.
- Ability to foster an inclusive workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued and leveraged to support the mission of the institution, and the strategic goals of the division.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong critical thinking, creative problem solving, and decision making skills.
- Ability to develop and implement college-wide human resource policies and organizational initiatives.
- Ability to modernize and streamline processes, taking full advantage of the Human Resources Information System.
- Competency in updating and streamlining HR systems and processes.
- Experience in health care negotiations and renewal processes, as well as retirement plan administration and regulations.
- Ability to create and benchmark HR related data.
- Experience working in an environment with a collective bargaining unit.
