Lab Assistant
Job Summary
Responsible for assisting the Lab Specialist with the preparation and shipping of the archival pathology tissue specimens for the clinical trials managed by Huntsman Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Office. The incumbent will be familiar with a variety of research laboratory concepts, practices, and procedures.

Essential Functions
1. Obtain and prepare archival tissue specimens for submission to central labs for clinical studies.
2. Re-stock supplies and pull kits as needed.
3. Return blocks to housing facilities.
4. Responsible for updating spreadsheets (sample counts, block inventory, block return).
5. Follow procedures and work practices related to storing and shipping research tissue specimens as defined in lab manuals, protocols and study-specific reference materials.
6. Ensures tissue specimen integrity through appropriate handling, accurate labeling, and correct documentation.
7. Able to work independently; demonstrates adequate problem-solving skills and awareness of available resources.
8. Manages time and workload efficiently and prioritizes workflow effectively.
9. Adheres to safe laboratory practices while maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
10. Communicates & collaborates effectively with all groups within the CTO, Sponsors and Tissue Housing Facilities.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:Nearly Continuously: Office environment.Often: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).Seldom: Exposure to animals.
Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be requiredNearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
Minimum Qualifications
One year full-time laboratory experience or equivalency required (1 year full-time lab equivalency equals successful completion of 2 semesters laboratory college course work) ; knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment and terminology as well as knowledge of chemical and physical properties of materials or substances and appropriate specimen handling techniques required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
