The assistant dean provides operational oversight and coordination for designated courses within the College for Online and Continuing Education (COCE). The assistant dean’s primary responsibilities are to work at the course section level to identify and help underperforming students, ensure faculty meet expectations, and analyze course quality. The assistant dean assures that the team leads monitor the success of at risk students on a weekly basis. The assistant dean evaluates the success of courses and students and works closely with the associate dean who has program oversight, and with the executive director. The assistant dean is adept at using data that focuses on student proficiency, outcomes and persistence to drive decision making and continuous improvement. He or she manages faculty team leads who each work with approximately 25 adjunct faculty. The assistant dean is also responsible for overseeing the hiring, the evaluation and the termination of adjunct faculty, faculty facilitators and team leads. The assistant dean reports to the Executive Director.


Essential duties and responsibilities of this position include the following:


  • Provide oversight for course sections, faculty and underperforming students on a weekly basis
  • Through ongoing data analysis of student performance and team lead and faculty feedback, determine course strengths and weaknesses and escalate curriculum issues to associate dean for resolution
  • Use ongoing data analysis at the course and section levels to identify underperforming students and assure team leads and faculty take appropriate steps to support struggling students
  • Hire, support, coordinate and evaluate team leads as well as facilitate their training
  • Ensure that team leads evaluate faculty on a regular and frequent basis and that they work effectively with faculty to coach them on how to support struggling students
  • Provide weekly analysis for course sections performing outside of expectations
  • Provide end of term analysis for courses performing outside of expectations
  • Provide ongoing operational oversight for all aspects of adjunct faculty and team leads: qualifications, hiring, scheduling approval, training, evaluation and termination, when necessary
  • Communicate adjunct faculty expectations
  • Respond to team lead and faculty questions about policies and procedures
  • Participate in establishing and adhering to policies, and help with ongoing communication and training of advisors and other staff
  • Resolve student complaints or problems at the course level
  • Handle course emergencies such as faculty illness or resignation during a term
  • Master’s degree in a STEM related discipline; Ph.D. preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in online program development
  • Demonstrated experience with data analysis
  • 2-4 years of successful experience working with students and faculty in an online environment
