Transfusion Medicine Medical Director

The Transfusion Medicine Section at the University of Utah is seeking an academically oriented Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine physician at the Assistant/Associate Professor level to serve as a Medical Director. Candidates must be board-certified AP/CP or CP only pathologists with board certification/eligibility in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. Academic rank and compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and accomplishments.

Expertise in the practice of hospital-based transfusion medicine is required. Duties will include clinical coverage and medical oversight of University of Utah health system Transfusion Services, as well as some involvement with the ARUP Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL), and ARUP Blood Services. The exact distribution of effort will depend on the successful candidate's background and the needs of the section.

Clinical and research interests in an area such as data-driven transfusion practice, novel blood components, genomics, immunohematology, and/or infectious diseases is desirable. The relative distribution of research / teaching / administrative duties / patient care responsibilities will be tailored to the successful applicant's experience and career goals.

The Transfusion Medicine Section at the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories includes the FDA-registered hospital-based Transfusion Service (Blood Bank) and the FDA-registered ARUP Blood Services Donor Center. It also includes an Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB) accredited Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) serving clients throughout the United States. The primary clinical/administrative role of the successful applicant will involve hospital-based transfusion services with the possibility of Blood Services/IRL clinical coverage.

Approximately 17,000 red blood cells and 30,000 total blood component transfusions occur annually at both centers.
