Lab Technician

Job Summary

The Weller Lab in the University of Utah School of Dentistry seeks a Laboratory Technician. Our multi-disciplinary lab works to identify viral-mediated triggers in the development of a chronic autoimmune disease called Sjögren's syndrome. Projects in the lab utilize next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, molecular biology and in vitro/in vivo models to identify and validate potential disease triggers and define the underlying mechanisms of autoimmunity.

The Laboratory Technician position will be responsible for working independently and as part of a team to design, conduct and analyze ongoing research in the lab. Duties may include but are not limited to: DNA, RNA, protein and virus isolation, tissue extraction, processing and preservation, immunohistochemistry, immunoassays, in vitro culture systems and working with multiple in vivo murine models.

Responsibilities
  • Work independently and collaboratively to design and conduct studies supporting ongoing research projects in the lab.
  • Maintain daily operations of the laboratory including, but not limited to, ordering lab supplies, maintenance of equipment, organization, and record keeping.
  • Prepare, organize and communicate scientific results in departmental, group and/or individual meetings, work with team to prepare results for scientific publications, grant proposals and presentations.
  • Implement, validate and document new methodologies and lab techniques, including writing detailed protocols and training new lab personnel.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
