Lab Technician

Job Summary

The Snyder lab at the HCI is looking for a Lab Technician (research scientist) to provide experimental and organizational support for the lab's research on lung and pancreatic cancer. The lab (https://uofuhealth.utah.edu/huntsman/labs/snyder/) uses genetically engineered mouse models, in combination with orthogonal in vitro techniques, to investigate regulators of cancer cell identity and therapeutic response.

Responsibilities
The candidate's responsibilities will include performing experiments under the guidance of senior lab members. Specific responsibilities include:1) Performing a wide variety of experiments under the supervision of the principal investigator and senior lab members. This will include working on specific project(s) as well as performing common techniques for multiple projects. Ability to accurately record data in a lab notebook and perform basic levels of analysis is essential.2) Mouse colony management. This will include breeding and genotyping mice harboring a complex mix of genetically engineered alleles, as well as administration of therapeutic agents for pre-clinical in vivo studies.3) Performing common experimental and lab management tasks that advance the overall mission of the lab.This job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:Nearly Continuously: Lab environment.Often: Working with animals, biological and chemical hazards, laboratory equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Preferences
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with some or all of the following techniques: mouse colony management, immunohistochemistry, mammalian tissue culture, western blotting, molecular biology and PCR, and microscopy. Candidates should be detail-oriented, capable of working independently and in small groups, and possess excellent organization, analytical, and communication skills. Potential exists for performing independent research and training new lab members.
