Lab Technician
Job Summary
The Venero Galanternik Lab in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is looking for a Laboratory Technician to help us establish our brand new lab and get our research in the meninges going!
Although some wet lab experience is preferred, the candidate to fill this position will work directly with the principal investigator, getting initial training in common zebrafish technical procedures, standard techniques in developmental and molecular biology, and will be expected to be in charge of everyday lab organization including animal handling, reagent preparation, ordering and database/record keeping. The candidate should be comfortable with the daily handling and experimentation of embryonic and adult zebrafish, this includes but is not limited to tissue dissections, basic surgeries, injections, and cellular dissociations. Additionally, the candidate may be responsible for maintaining lab common areas and equipment, assist with inventory, ordering, receiving and inspecting of laboratory and fish facility materials and equipment. Once trained, the candidate will be expected to help training other upcoming lab members, including summer, undergraduate and graduate students. Responsibilities
1. Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed.
2. Performs specialized tests and procedures using complex equipment.
3. Procures supplies and materials needed for laboratory research.
4. Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research.
5. Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
6. May supervise the care of research animals; perform minor animal surgery or collect animal tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis.
7. Orders supplies and experimental materials needed to conduct research.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
