Job Description:

The University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor at the intersection of Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The successful applicant will also be a member of the UAlbany AI Institute and will be hired into the Cybersecurity Department in the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC). There are opportunities for collaboration across departments, particularly through our interdisciplinary Information Science doctoral program. Partner departments include Computer Science, Sociology, Public Administration, Digital Forensics, Information Systems & Business Analytics. Research labs within the Cybersecurity Department include the Responsible AI Lab, Cyber Cascade Risk Lab, Hack IoT Lab, and Cyber Range.

CEHC has a goal of creating an interdisciplinary team of researchers and educators capable of preparing our students to successfully explore and interpret the rich array of disciplines and perspectives contained within cybersecurity and allied disciplines.

Essential responsibilities:
  • Build and sustain synergistic, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research agenda within Cybersecurity and AI that directly strengthens the vision of the Cybersecurity Department, CEHC, and the greater University at Albany to impact the real world in various contexts, such as business, healthcare, energy & sustainability, critical infrastructure, and government
  • Develop and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses in live and online environments that foster transformation toward a more secure and just society
  • Advise and mentor diverse undergraduate and graduate students with a strong commitment to excellence, diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Contribute to administrative responsibilities within the Cybersecurity Department and CEHC
  • Engage the UAlbany community, Cybersecurity professionals and academic societies, industry, and granting agencies

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

A PhD or other terminal degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization by 8/31/2025. Candidates who will not hold the degree by this date will not be considered.

  • Applicants for Assistant Professor must demonstrate their experience or potential in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in CYB and AI, in varying modalities (in-person, online, and/or hybrid) and address their plan to contribute to the Cybersecurity curriculum.
  • Applicants for Associate Professor must demonstrate their experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in CYB and AI, in varying modalities (in-person, online, and/or hybrid) and address their plan to contribute to the Cybersecurity curriculum.
  • Applicants for Assistant Professor must provide evidence of Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence in their existing research program.
  • Applicants for Associate Professor must demonstrate a record of published scholarship on topics in the field of Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence, requisite for an appointment as Associate Professor in the field of Cybersecurity and AI. Demonstrated experience or potential in teaching cybersecurity and/or AI related subjects.
  • Applicants for Assistant Professor must have a demonstrated potential for obtaining external funding for their research.
  • Applicants for Associate Professor must have experience in applying for and obtaining external funding for their research.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Clear plan for developing a scholarly agenda in Cybersecurity and AI at UAlbany.
  • Institutional, regional, national, or international recognized scholar and researcher in Cybersecurity and AI, requisite for an Associate Professor.
  • A record of applying for and/or obtaining extramural funding for Assistant Professor level applicants.
  • Expertise, experience and active research in Cyber Defense and/or Cyber Operations, including applications in malware analysis, reverse engineering, SCADA security and offensive threat modeling.
  • Ability to develop classes in existing and emerging subfields of cybersecurity, AI, machine learning and related fields.
  • Experience or ability in designing, creating, and delivering classes in areas related to Programming for Cybersecurity, Web Technologies, Database Security, Data Structures, Web Application Security, Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms, Data Structures, Operating Systems, Penetration Testing, Secure Software Development, Reverse Engineering and Malware Analysis, Wireless Technologies and Security.
  • Demonstrated experience with related disciplines, collaboration principles, and the operation of various sub-areas of cybersecurity. This includes understanding the ethical underpinnings, necessary protections, data sources, privacy, and areas of critical economic or societal importance.
  • Demonstrate breadth of interest, capability, and collegial relationship maturity across a wide range of areas germane to cybersecurity discovery, innovation, research, and teaching.
