Eye Bank Field Tissue Recovery Specialist- Eastern Idaho

Job Summary

The Eye Bank Field Tissue Recovery Specialist is a part-time position, and is responsible for the surgical recovery of corneal eye tissues for transplant and research. The role also performs and documents a donor physical and ocular assessment and surgical corneal excision; obtaining an adequate blood specimen for serological testing; and conducting professional interactions with hospital staff, OPO and tissue bank staff, coroners office, and funeral directors.

The Utah Lions Eye Bank—an extension of the John A. Moran Eye Center—is a nonprofit organization and has facilitated the gift of sight worldwide through transplantation and research since 1972. By restoring vision, cornea donation changes not only the lives of recipients but also the lives of everyone around them. Located in Murray, Utah, we are a full-service eye bank operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming.

Responsibilities
The Eye Bank Field Tissue Recovery Specialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Performing surgical excisions of corneas and corneoscleral rim excision and aseptic preservation.
  • Draw cadaveric blood samples and/or obtain a pre-transfusion/pre-mortem blood sample, if necessary.
  • Process each donor appropriately including data entry, charting, and follow-up.
  • Conduct professional interactions with Eye Bank Donor Coordinators and other staff to facilitate timely procurement of donor eye tissue.
  • Label, package, and ship ocular tissue per FDA/EBAA/ULEB Policies and Procedures to Envision and the Utah Lions Eye Bank.


Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree in biology, chemistry or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. Certification as an Eye Bank Technician, Ophthalmic Technician or Tissue Bank Specialist is preferred. Experience with aseptic technique and medical terminology also preferred.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Preferences
Applicant may reside in Eastern Idaho; Pocatello, Blackfoot, or Idaho Falls preferred.

Prefer background as EMT, MA, CNA or equivalent hospital experience
