Job Summary
The Moran Eye Center is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the Vinberg laboratory. Potential projects include, but are not limited to, studying light signaling in the human retina and/or retinal remodeling and plasticity during photoreceptor degenerative disease. Approaches include electrophysiology, live Ca2+/glutamate imaging and optogenetic methods. The research will be conducted at the John A. Moran Eye center at the University of Utah in a large wet lab, custom-build dark rooms that include patch clamp, live cell/tissue imaging, ex vivo ERG and MEA setups. Candidate will have a unique access to fresh human eye tissue suitable for ex vivo physiological studies of the human central and peripheral retina. We have also many genetically engineered mouse lines including ones suitable for optogenetic studies as well as facilities to house more mouse lines if needed. We will provide state-of-the-art technical resources and comprehensive mentoring in the Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences department that is ranked among nation's top 10 with an active basic and translational vision science community. PI is also active in the highly regarded Neuroscience Program and Biomedical Engineering department at the University of Utah. In this environment candidate will be exposed to nation's top scientists not only in vision science but also in neurobiology. Candidates are expected to design and conduct research, write grants and papers, and present their work in conferences. Individual career development plan will be created based on the candidate's own career preferences.
Responsibilities
- Wet lab experiments, data analysis, mouse colony management, human tissue processing, paper and grant writing, oral presentations, conference attendance.
- Work may sometimes be required outside of the standard office hours.
Minimum Qualifications
• A Completed Doctoral degree in a related field, e.g. Computer Science, Software Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Computational Sciences, etc.
• Good English language skills (verbal and written)
• Ability to work independently, and within teams.
• Experience with standard engineering and coding practices for developing large scientific computing software preferably using Java.
• Experience with graph data stores, micro-services and event driven messaging services is a plus.
This is a one-year appointment with the expectations of annual renewals upon satisfactory performance.
Preferences
PhD preferably in the field of visual neurobiology. Prior experience in vision science and live cell imaging and/or electrophysiology and/or computational approaches is preferred.
